SOC Analyst Level I
$52, 000-$63, 000 DOE
Full time (on call)

Bachelor’s Degree (required)
CISSP (required)
OSCP (required)
CEH (required)
GSEC (required)
Network+ (required for some fucking reason)
12+ years experience (required)

Job description: You will be working entirely by yourself and blamed for any security issues that happen at any time of day for any reason. You will also be required to handle all helpdesk tickets because we don’t understand the difference between security and technical support and are too cheap to hire more than 1 person.

Your advice about studying the cert material in order to understand it as opposed to just passing the test is spot on!

Collecting a bunch of certs will help you filter your way through the applicant tracking systems. They might even get you through the HR/recruiter gatekeepers! But sooner or later, when the day finally comes for you to stand tall before the hiring manager, you better know how to apply that knowledge ;).

I wish you all the best!

I have a BAS in Cybersecurity, am currently in an IT job, have an internship under my belt, and am actively pursuing my Security+ and OSCP and haven’t received 1 interview in nearly 300 job applications. I include my résumé and a cover letter. How is it so difficult to even get an interview in a field that’s considered “in-demand”? My professors told me getting a job in my field would be like throwing a dart at a dartboard. Even if I don’t land the perfect Cyber job instantly, it’s very easy to get something —- WRONG. GETTING AN ENTRY LEVEL CYBERSECURITY JOB IS IMPOSSIBLE. EMPLOYERS THESE DAYS WANT 5+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, A DEGREE, AND AT LEAST 1 CERTIFICATION FOR ENTRY LEVEL. I went to school just for this and can’t get an entry level job no matter what I do. Fuck this industry man so frustrated

I had a Program Director tell me straight up that many candidates cannot explain hashing versus encryption. I guess people are just not trying, most of them.

Crazy part is I knew some of the stuff he mentioned and I haven’t even majored in cyber security yet… just young me messing with my computer trying to understand why things weren’t working or why things worked the way they did.
