In this episode of PC for Beginners we're taking a look at the harddrive and SSD landscape. Everything from how it has evolved from slow spinning mechanical drives to drives that have no mechanical parts and operate so quickly it's hard to understand. Plus, there are some key things to consider when deciding what storage approach you want to go with!

This is neat. A good idea IMO, whoever came up with the idea of putting this on the Uplay store deserves a raise!

And to those who think of a record player in order to comprehend HDD components: Hi, Grandma/Grandpa, so happy you're here trying to find a way to get closer to and understand your grandkids!

This video is informative, but if I may, I suggest using more visuals like diagrams in the future. For example, when you describe the plates, spindle motor, read head, actuator arm, and the arm's axis, it would have much easier to understand for a novice had you displayed a picture of the internal components of a hard disk drive. Thanks for allowing me to comment.

thank you, Gabe (is that how u spell your name), I really appreciate you explaining hard drives and the different kinds. I was never around a lot of computers when I was growing up. now I want to learn how everything works, when it comes to a computers software and hardware. now i'm glad I am one step closer to my goal.

NVMe is a "Protocol" and M.2 is a form factor. That's a very important point and you didn't mention it.

"MBPS" means "Megabits per second."
"MB/S" means "Megabytes per second."
(8 Bits equal 1 byte.)

First Samsung SSD EVO PRO 512 GB. M.2 in PCIe on Motherboard = NVMe for only system and some programs to use with win10 pro, second Samsung SSD EVO PLUS 1 T. also pcie on Mobo too = nvme for fat games (50 to 100 GB.) and Together = very fast. Also 2 Samsung SSD on sata3 for regular and thin games under 25 GB. (all 6 slots are 6 GB./S.) on Asus Rog Strix Z390 E-Gaming + i9-9900K and Z490 E-Gaming + i9-10900K... Like the song : "Sound of silence"...

Imagine not having an HDD... not hearing rattles, spinny sounds... hushing and vibrations every time you turn on your work laptop :D

I learned about NVMe just a few days ago and I've been obsessed with getting one ever since. I keep window shopping, just looking at them. And it turns out my motherboard has had these sockets this whole time, I just didn't know. They're expensive, though. I'll wait til Black Friday for the deals.

Would it be fair to say that the m.2 NVMe is faster with games than the sdd then?

Nice video, but some pictures or video clips of the parts you were talking about would have been super helpful. For example when talking about HDD parts, which you went into in great detail, it would've been nice to see some visual material instead of just plain text. I mean, I know what they are, so I can rely on my imagination quite well, but for the general audience... ;P

Love the music! Goes perfect with the video because after this, HDD users will be "cheating" with SDD drives!

why don't they make 500TB storage for HDD / SSD???

See the recommended videos with Bitwit and Linus Tech Tips? Go there instead if you truly want to learn more and make good buying decisions. HDD's have their use still for at home or work NAS solutions.
