I recently went to Ecuador on a community service trip with my school, and one of the lodges we stayed at had no wifi and the other hotels had very poor wifi in the rooms. I barely used my phone, and spent so much more time actually talking to my friends. It was so amazing. (and as for loosing my snapchat streaks, I just gave my snapchat password to my best friend.)

I teach Comp. sci. I have my students do a 24 hours NO technology as a project. The responses are amazing! Yes, take a vacation/break/etc. once in a while. Your pets, friends, SOs, children will appreciate it.

I think the problem with these kinds of studies is that there are too many things you can do on a smartphone now. Instead of generalising all smartphone activities, they need to specify which activities are the ones that are harmful, and whether those activities should be avoided on other devices as well.

I don't spend 4.7 hours on my phone each day, but if I'm home definitely spend this much time on my laptop for non-work purposes. Is it the same principle?
Is social media the problem? The kind of mindless scrolling you get on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, etc.?
What about work emails?
What if I'm reading the news or an ebook?
Does watching YouTube videos count (and in that case, is it as problematic watching them on a computer?)
Someone mentioned listening to music on a phone. Surely that does not take the same kind of toll on mental capacities as constant instant messaging.
I don't play video games, but is gaming on a console the same as games on a phone?

Most of the time, I tend to stay away from my phone (unless I have to deposit a check or make a phone call). I've even been yelled at by some family members because I keep it on my charger once I get home and leave it while I go off and do other things in the other room. lol

I use my phone quite often on weekdays to talk to my boyfriend. But on weekends when we are together I pick it up maximum twice a day.
