If only the furnaces I work on were cleaned like this before I arrive..

I had a capacitor fail. A technician installed a new one in 15 minutes cost $250. Then I learn That I could have bought one and replace it myself for $20 and 16 minutes. Later i wanted my furnace cleaned and inspected but they were not going to clean the blower fan unless I paid extra $560. I said wow! I can clean that myself with a nut driver and shop vac in 30 minutes. The HVAC repair companies pray on people who don't know how things work and charge whatever they can get!!

And now nowadays that's 225 thank you very much sucker
Back in the day there was much more to do when it came to servicing a furnace maybe that's why they lasted so much longer

Be careful blowing air onto a board as it can result in static buildup

I have a question. What reason would the wires that attach to the switch beside the furnace would be spliced into four segments?

If you are following the tips in this video, keep in mind when tightening screws on a board's terminal strip, that it will be costly to replace. Not only shorting components (if you left the power on) with your screwdriver by accident, but also the person that landed those wires before you may have overtightened them. Obviously we go by feel when tightening things in life, but not everyone has a sense of how much torque they are applying. If you snap a component off of the board or even strip out one of those terminals, you may end up replacing the entire board. With older stuff and the heat nearby, its not uncommon for a terminal strip or component to become brittle or partially un-soldered from the board, in which case you can create a bad connection by accident and not even know it until the unit stops working properly, or worse.... Best practice is to give wires a gentile tug test, if they stay in place, leave them alone. You'll be able to feel a loose screw, in which case you should gently tighten it to make a solid connection.

My furnace is so old that the sponge stuff on the sides is crumbling. Can that be replaced and with what please?

Definitely don’t shut the gas off before you perform a furnace cleaning.

And this would help the furnace how? It won’t operate better, won’t take care of maintenance related items such as flame sensors, drains etc. kinda like washing your car and saying you perform the scheduled maintenance
