i like the dry comment.. like, "they made a big hole in my garden. so we invented the Blockbuster and made a big hole in their cities"...

The blockbuster was to cause as much blast damage as possible, especially damaging or removing the roofs of buildings, which then made it easier for the slower-falling incendiaries to do their work. And when a 4000lbs blockbuster wasn’t enough, they could bolt extra sections onto them to create 8000lb and even 12, 000lb blockbusters, the Lancaster being the only plane capable of carrying the larger size versions. Even a Mosquito (with a bulged bomb bay) could carry a 4000lb ‘cookie’ to Berlin, which was a pretty deadly combination.
My dad used to collect incendiaries when he was a kid in WW2. This was just something kids did. One of his mates who admittedly did have a bit of a bad-boy reputation once walked into their local police station and said to the officer on duty there ‘Is it right you’re looking for things like this?’ and placed a burned-out incendiary on the desk. ‘No, son, those are safe. It’s the ones that haven’t gone off that we worry about.’ ‘Oh’ said the lad, ‘You mean like these?’ and tipped a bag full of duff incendiaries on the desk. Apparently there were soon cops leaving the building by any available exit!
Funnily enough, after his parents passed away in the 1960’s he heard that the big family bungalow they’d lived in since the 1930’s had been demolished and he wondered if he had left in the attic some of those old (but empty) incendiaries he’d collected as a boy….

The best documentary I have ever listened to was on BBC Radio 4. The programme was simply called ‘Bomber’ and was narrated by Tom Baker. He used to play ‘Dr Who.’ It portrayed the nastiness of the bomber offensive from everyone’s point of view, for both the civilians and the aircrew. Worth listening to.

My father Vincent Gilchrist Cowen was in 460 squadron Lancaster and flew many missions over Germany, once on the way back, he told me a story as a kid, 3 of the 4 Merlin's were shot to pieces, the last one operated at 120 percent emergency power for 57 min as it was the only engine running, it made it back almost to England, they had to bail out half a mile before the beach at 65 feet, their parachutes didn't even open properly, they bounced along the sea and finally swam the last bit, the Lancaster was still running when it hit the water, he said that Merlin V12 lasted well over its limit at 120 percent, it got them home .

As an RAF engineer, Dad worked on the planes they used during the filming of The Dambusters. When that film was on telly, he always said, "They're not really Lancasters, they used Lincolns."

One of these flew over my house today. I had to do a double take I was so shocked. I saw the tail and knew immediately what it was and where it was going. It was the Lancaster from the Hamilton ON Canada warplane heritage museum, and it was heading back home after a show.

My grandad was a mechanic for the Lancasters during ww2. Still got his tool box with some original tools and dog tag.

A straight forward design to do the job, not win any beauty contest and it's an amazing aircraft that did the job.

I’ve seen the Lancaster at the MOTAT Museum in Auckland, NZ. Absolutely massive, the wheels are almost as tall as me!

I live in a southern German town that’s completely destroyed by a bomb raid in early 1945. My grandmother, who lives 40km away from the city still remembers the yellow and red glowing night sky from the fires. It’s horrible what happened.

My great gramps was the copilot of one of these. He participated in the bombing of Dresden. When i was young i made the mistake to ask him how it felt to kill the Bad guys. He looked me dead i the eyes and told me in these raspy voice:" Boy, when i looked from up there into the flames, i was hella sure we were the Bad guys, And whys that? Because we still threw them at the blondies, although we already must have set every building, street, man, woman and child ablaze that was even near this city!"
