It's only the F35A that can't fly near thunderstorms. They are still working on the system to make the fuel inert so it doesn't react badly to lightning. Apparently, the F35B & F-35C don't have the same restrictions.

Idk what you guys are smoking, but F35As fly in thunderstorms all the time. And before you test my knowledge yes I’m at a 35 base and I know what I’m talking about. they can choose to ground jets in thunderstorms because it’s not worth the risk in peace time operations. But It’s an all weather jet for a reason. The only problem is that there’s not all weather pilots🤷🏾‍♂️.

It's inert gas system gets damaged by the lightning because the airframe is made of composite epoxy materials instead of standard aluminum. The aluminum in other jets distributes the electrical charge across the airframe.

In the early 1980's I was a medic assigned to the 44th TFW. My supervisor put in paperwork for me to receive an incentive flight while deployed in the Philippines. One day it was POURING rain and I figured - not flying today and ordered a pizza. Ate all of it. The doc walks into our clinic and says "Get your flight suit on, you step in 5!" I look outside and say "It's raining" Doc replies "The F-15 is an ALL WEATHER, Air Superiority, fighter aircraft. And it can fly OVER clouds." Most fun I ever had with my clothes on.

I'm sure it will be fixed. During its certification period it couldn't fly in lightning storms until it passed tests. After that it was certified. There's no reason why the fuel tank problem can't be fixed. That's an easy one.
