Was fortunate enough to be one of the maintainers for the F-35 he flew during the 2017 Paris International Airshow. Billy is an incredible pilot.

I think the biggest misconception that the public has about the Lightning II is that it was never meant to be a standalone fighter. People don't fully understand what it can provide for allied fighters.

You can almost hear Pierre Sprey whining from the grave.

In another interview out there he described how he needed the engineers to help him create the show in order to max perform the jet while having ZERO percent chance of crashing it because if they lost the bird at an airshow, the whole program would be in jeopardy due to the crush of such bad press. So they ran it over and over in the flight sim and established all the parameters of the show.

If this thing has the best of both the Viper and the Hornet in its maneuverability wheelhouse, then DCS better give its flight model some updates and Growling Sidewinder better make some videos :D

This is the first person I’ve seen that explained this..
A falling leaf maneuver usually requires a thrust vectoring nozzle and the fact that the F-35 can do that without it just because it has such a powerful engine is a treatment to its maneuverability.
I’m sure it has some blind spots and it’s not the dominant dogfighter that the F-22 is but it’s got to be a contender on some kind of level if it can do all of that

I remember being utterly gobsmacked at the first videos of that routine. The F-35 had arrived, and how!

Amen. F-35 is maybe my number 1, along with the F-16c and all respect for the raptors. Too many people are talking snuff on my 35. Just crazy how many haters. Well here you go.

Well, despite the fact that B.V.R. is an excellent tactic. Once an aircraft no matter how technologically advanced runs out of missiles. Dogfighting is still an option.

Keep in mind the F-16 can move like this with a mission load out, the F-35 can.

Technically speaking. That's amazing. F-16, F-18, F-22. you had me at hello.

The F-35 turns better than a F-16. It performs like a F-22 in a turn. Fantastic engine and state of the art control surfaces

Not the engine. The engine is already used outside its operating specs. The replacement GE RR upgrade was canceled to bring costs down only to burn through more engines and needing a new engine again. It will be a great plane, if anything for the wide integration in NATO fleets and sensor suite, but one can argue about the program costs and management.

It can do a lot of things. Just not any of them better then an airframe that is role specific ie F-22 for air superiority, F-15E for air to ground, F-15C/EX for missile truck and BVR.

First time I saw a F35 in a air show, I’m looking at this thing thinking how the F@%k is that not capable. It was impressive and everyone got the wrong idea about this fighter.

It's not that it can't dogfight, it just doesn't do it as well as something built for air superiority, such as the F-15 or F-22...provided they can see it. Even an F-14 could target I think up to 11 of them simultaneously, again, if they could acquire it.

All I know is, I didn't think the F35 was that big, but my God, I saw it down in Manhattan Kansas and it was a work of art.
