Do you know why they didn't use the most modern fighter jet for the last Top Gun movie?
A lot of moviegoers questioned why producer Jerry Bruckheimer didn't use the latest, most modern fighter jet in the Top Gun movie, such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning. Showcasing America's latest technology. The primary reason, the F-35 only comes as a single-seater, which would have made shooting the actors very difficult and primarily use visual effects to compensate. Therefore they decided to use the Boeing F-18 F two-seater, mounting the cameras on the back of the pilot seat.

I would imagine the F-35 is still extremely classified as well.

Whether they intended it or not, the Hornet is a metaphor for Maverick himself, around since the eighties, refuses to retire, competent as hell and still has a lot to teach the young hotshots.

“This your flight attendant speaking there has been some minor issues we will take off shortly”.

No matter, the F-35 has enough cameras on it to shoot it’s own movie.

They also wanted the movie to be longer than 30 minutes

Also, if it were F-35, the cockpit scenes would just be Tinted Visor Helmets. No reason to film the real G-Force expressions

Fun fact: in the beginning of the second top gun movie, you can see a F35 taking off with VTOL on the carrier

Also, the F-35 is so stealthy, the cameras couldn't see it.

One of the story elements was 'It's not the plane, it's the pilot.' which I'd imagine is partly why they went for the slightly older Super Hornet.

Here's why they didn't use:
1. Operating costs will buy you 7 Bugattis.
2. The budget was blown on Tom Cruise's salary. 💀💀

They explain in the movie that there is countless radar jammers leaving the munitions of the F35 obsolete. Not sure if that would be the case in RL but it was the case in the script lol

Breifing on carrier: (edit: stop yapping in the replies)

Maverick: They have fifth gen fighters and we have F-18's

Opening scene, F35 drops a bomb undetected... next scene end of movie rolling credits.

An F35 would never need to go into a dogfight.

Who wants to watch a movie where an aircraft is sniping targets with rockets undetected from miles away?
yeah...

Im pretty sure the Navy said No for security reasons

Not to mention the F35 is a strategic fighter bomber, not a dedicated dogfighter

A. Too expensive
B. Classified
C. Maverick himself points out the gps jamming

Edit: thank u for so many likes and for correcting me.

There's a simpler reason: they wanted America to look like the underdogs

They have 5th gen fighters!
F35 pilots: so do we.
