UIM is the acronym for an Underinsured Motorist, which is a type of car insurance coverage. There are many occasions when there is a car accident that the at-fault driver's insurance policy limits are simply not enough to cover their victims' claims. UIM coverage applies when an at-fault driver does not have enough coverage to compensate injured victims in the collision.

In Washington State, where we practice, the law allows minimum limits of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury damages. When there are collisions with cars and trucks that weigh many tons, significant injuries occur and medical bills can quickly reach in the tens of thousands of dollars, in addition to lost time from work, and other damages.

This leaves the injured victim and their family searching for other avenues of relief as the injured may need surgery, rehabilitative care, physical therapy, vocational rehab, or have other medical needs. In addition to the physical pain, this can cause tremendous financial strain upon a family.

UIM coverage is typically combined with uninsured motorist (UM) coverage on an auto insurance policy. UM provides coverage when another driver is at fault in an accident and is uninsured or flees the scene after an accident without being identified. Hit-and-run collisions can cause very serious injuries. .

If you have been in an accident with an uninsured driver or have a high damage claim, please call Bishop Legal at 1-800-291-1821.
