UM/UIM (Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist) insurance has to be provided by your insurance company. It covers you in a situation where, for example, you've got $100K in damages and bills after an accident and the at-fault driver is underinsured and has only $25K. Where does the difference come from? You turn to your own insurance company and ask for the balance of the claim. They will then evaluate your claim and propose a figure. If you've got enough coverage, you'll likely get that amount of coverage if it's in your policy. So, in the above example, you could have your insurance make up the $75K to make a full recovery.
