Ever heard of RAW photos? If so you've probably been told that you should shoot RAW, and alot of the time thats true. But, there are pros and cons to both RAW and jpeg files when you're taking photos, this video lists them!

Any questions let me know!

Cheers,

James

Again, apologies to the vegetarians, I definitely could've used carrots...

One of the best explanations of RAW vs JPEG I've ever seen. Because large capacity cards are so cheap these days, it's worth shooting both simultaneously, unless your camera has a crap buffer, and you need to extend the burst capacity! I shoot a lot of functions/prizegivings etc, where I need to print large numbers of images on the spot, and tend to shoot JPEG only on those occasions, but the images in question are taken under studio lighting conditions, so there is no need to edit any of them prior to printing.

Shooting JPG increases the sports or wildlife burst buffer size over RAW. Select a neutral or natural picture profile and reduce the saturation and sharpening and you get most of the post processing benefits of RAW. Just make sure your exposure is on.

The way you managed to time this to hit just before the great 2017 internet raw v jpg debate exploded is very cunning. Popped up in my recommendations, just like I'm sure you planned! :)

Never yet seen a bad photo turned into a good one in post. The simplest ingredients make a good steak and a good picture. The horrors of melon chutney with guacamole and HDR are always lurking in the menu.

Programs like Coral After Shot Pro and Alien Skin Exposure X3 make messing with RAW files just as easy as JPEG...I never shoot JPEG anymore because of that..Both of these programs can be downloaded for free for a few weeks to try before you buy them...Both are worth the money...

Nicely explained and illustrated James.

I like to shoot RAW plus JPG myself as its much faster to preview JPG files then RAW files on my 2012 MBP.

And sometimes, I don't even edit my files at all. Sometimes the JPG is perfect straight out of camera.

My post-processing is usually very subtle as I'm not a fan of "fixing" a photo in Lr or Ps, but rather "finishing" it.

Excellent analogy, James. I would encourage all new photographers to shoot JPEG as a challenge. Get it right in camera. When I was starting I would do that, as well as limit myself to 24 frames (shots) emulating shooting with film. My camera has a flip LCD so I would turn that so I couldn't chip and wait til I got home and look at the pictures in my computer. It's challenging and fun. Just grab your camera, walk around your neighborhood, no pressure, your are shooting for yourself.

My view is if you have jpg and raw and you have enough space, why not shoot both? If the jpg doesn't work I can edit the raw but if the jpg looks great, just use the jpg :)

Very helpful video and very funny! Steak looked delicious!
I agree with what you said, but I find that for me as someone who is still learning a lot (and shoots wildlife) jpegs are better to learn the taking picture part of it all and Raw is better for learning editing.

Love your channel and work though, I've been completely hooked on it since I discovered it! Thank you for the amazing, uplifting content!

I tried to edit RAW files twice and gave up, don't have that patience to learn, I'd stick with taking the best possible shot on field rather than adjusting it for hours later, and editing many RAW files each time ? it's just a pain in the a**.

Great analogy. Now you just have to work on that, “I’m smelling something awful” look. 😉

Is there ANY way to smallify my Raw files enough to transfer them to Facebook? When I tried to import them to Facebook for a zoo wildlife album, they were rejected. I had to use JPEG.
