This piece is complete hype for the lazy. First off, Idalia didn’t form in the Gulf, it formed south of Cuba. Second there is nothing special about this season. Idalia was essentially weakened by the jet stream which forced it in the direction it went. The jet stream is following a pattern specific to an El Niño. If El Niño wasn’t here, Idalia would have been cat 5 and slammed straight in to FL going north. Instead it was deflected to the east by the jet stream. And even more so, the strength of the El Niño is driven by the globally reflected heat from the stratosphere because the Tonga volcano sent huge amounts of water into the stratosphere in Jan 22. Maybe this Fox wX channel could get some real meteorological scientist on board and turn off the hype.
