How to avoid confusing similar languages

A lot of you want to learn multiple languages to travel.

The list often includes languages that are similar to each other.

Like Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French.

They all belong to the same family and are quite similar to each other.

Many people end up speaking "portuñol" for example.

Even after years of living in the country.

Thankfully, there's a simple exercise you can do to avoid this:

Use your Language Islands.
1. Translate the same sentences into the different languages you're learning.
2. Then translate the sentences into the target language mentally, say them aloud, compare and correct.
3. Do it with each sentence in all languages first.
4. The whole Language Island into one language at a time next.
5. You can do an easier version of this exercise with vocabulary lists if the Language Islands are too difficult at first:

Prepare a vocabulary list with all languages.
1. Memorise them with associations.
2. Do active recall.
3. You can also translate from one target language to another target language:

For example translate your Spanish Language Islands into Portuguese in speaking, then compare and correct. Simple way to learn the differences.

Combine this exercise with plenty of listening in ALL LANGUAGES you're learning and you'll be fine.
