My ONE trick for not confusing languages | Polyglot tips

Do polyglots mix languages? How do we "get into the mode" of speaking a language? What helps someone not mix up languages?

Confusing two languages in which I'm a beginner is definitely a problem I've faced in the past. To get around this, I try to focus on one language until I start to understand stories, articles and movies, only then would I start learning another one.

I started learning Ukrainian by myself recently but didn't practise with anybody. I started lerning Polish about two years ago and get a lot of practice and I learned some Russian previously. Recently a lady visited the shop where I work and when I discovered she was Ukrainian I was so happy to have the opportunity to practise some Ukrainian... I mixed up the three languages! It didn't matter because she could speak Russian and understand Polish so we were able to communicate in a mixture. The same thing happened when I spoke to two Italian ladies in Spitaliano. One of them had been living in Uruguay. Both spoke Spanish, so it was OK.

I've been practicing Portuguese recently and I often mix Spanish words by accident. The culprit is usually the word for "forget". I often use "olvidar" (the Spanish word) instead of "esquecer" (the Portuguese word).

I once tried to learn portuguese and spanish at the same time, and it was confusing, I think it's better to have a decent level in one of them first in order to have a deeper understanding of the language and therefore not mistaking it with one another.

Love it! Short, sweet, and to the point. I have tried to stick to one language for a study time and do it all at once before switching to another, but a lot of times, it's more convenient to do a little something of another language thing and then go back to the other and that switching just has to happen. I've thought about should I dedicate a day to a language, but I think I would be like you. I don't think I would like it much. Also, you just always have the most adorable jewelry items. Those little fish in a bag earrings are cute! They make me want to wear earrings again XD

ya I do confuse between Korean and Japanese. Since both are very similar and some words are similar too. Especially the filler words as you said. 그럼, 아니면, でも、ええと、なに、and so on😂

That was very helpful. My French teacher also taught Spanish and I noticed she would always say a French sentence to herself before starting the class. Now, I understand the reason and that it can work. I'm going to give it a try.

I really only became fluent (B2) in a second language about a year ago. I usually do about 2 hours of immersion in my target language every morning, and as a result, I find that when I later arrive at work, I often make the mistake of talking in my target language instead of my native language of English.

I really don't know people who know 3+ languages, and are immersing themselves in these other languages regularly, can not go through the day without confusing languages at times. What a beautiful flaw to have though. :)

I did also find it boring studying a language each day. It just sucks the joy of learning.💁‍♀️
Back to learning whatever language I feel like at the moment, I spend a lot of time and don't feel 'sick' about it, I'm much more productive that way.

Regarding small words.. I do all the filler words and stuff in Japanese when I speak Korean. Like うん。はい。そうそう。ええ！The stuff that’s so reflexive I can’t even think before I say it. Actually I was doing them in English for a little while when I first came back from Japan. I’m surprised nobody called me on it.

I’m learning Korean which is similar to Japanese which I’ve studied a LOT and I am mixing the two languages when I try to speak Korean. I think part of it is just that I’m old. When I was in college and studying German, French, and Spanish, I wasn’t exactly fluent in all three but if I tried to speak any of them I never misspoke. They were all stored in different parts of my brain. I think it’s an old person problem.

I’ve never really had issues mixing up languages. My experience has been pretty much exactly what you described. I think you also get better at handling multiple languages as you keep learning new languages 😊 love your videos Lindie! Keep it up!

Same with me. Once I hear I can speak in the language. Yes, I agree with you.

I completely mix up French conjugations after I spoke a lot of Spanish! My French is not great, that is probably why. Now I also mix lots of Dutch in my German and I use Spanish filler words in Persian, because some words in the last two languages happen to be the same, like 'vale' and 'bale' which mean okay and yes in Spanish and Persian, respectively. I'd love to get better in switching the languages, like you! Thanks.

Hearing someone talking in another language also helps me switch to that language. However, the biggest problem for me is that in my main language, french, I take words from other languages, make them sound french and just add them to whatever I'm saying. It's usually words that don't have a direct equivalent in french. For some reason I don't do that with other languages, but yeah, the more tired I am the less french I am actually going to be speaking.
