I get confused easily, especially by my own feelings. I'll be unsure if I'm acting in a healthy way if I'm anxious and feeling needy, for example. Furniture assembly is fine as long as it isn't Ikea lmao

Yes! Best explanation of instinct and gut feeling - it's the subconscious picking up and processing something that the conscious brain hasn't noticed and or figured out yet. That's why it's so critical to value and pay attention to one's gut feeling and instincts and not dismiss them.

The whole comparison to horse thing is great. Horses sense danger before humans do - because they have more and different / sharper senses but also because there's all instinct.

But can you imagine people (especially those who live and work with horses) dismissing a horse's instincts? Especially on that is clearly indicating there is physical danger present? No! So we shouldn't dismiss our own gut feelings and instincts.*

* = Unless we've gotten to the point where we sense danger everywhere and where it doesn't exist. Then help is needed including with thought distortions, emotional processing, etc.

i stopped going to therapy because growing up multiple therapists had given up on me from the start because i either wouldn't talk or they just didn't know what to do with me. but the straw that broke the camels back was around the first half of 2021 when i was on the phone with my therapist and he noticed i had difficulties with talking and to come up with words. when i explained to him i'm like that towards literally everyone because of my disability with speach, he laughed out loud. he was laughing to the fact i told him i always had difficulties with forming proper sentences when speaking and i would need to take more time to properly put words into the right place, or to restart my sentences to try again.
after that i only became more aware of my disability making it even harder for me to live with it and to deal with it. all because that therapist thought it was funny i wasn't able to speak properly

reasoning why i rather type things down than to talk about it out loud with someone. because as i type i can read back and move some words around or to see if it even make any sense at all

Very true what Jono says here.abo Journaling (like talk therapy) helps you not only see the puzzle pieces / get them out, but also leads to finding the next pieces of the puzzle and ultimately the whole thing, etc.

This is so helpful. I have ADHD myself and I've started seeing a therapist recently and I've noticed that it really helps to be able to get my thoughts out. I also have the problem that if I try to just think in my head, my brain just wanders off onto tangents. I'm going to try talking out loud to myself and see if that helps. Thank you.

Thanks for the video and tips. It really helps. My next question is (since I get confused more easily than others) why others don't get as confused as me even if they are doing something for the first time, but I do get confused even when I have some knowledge prior.

Jonathan, thank you for sharing that you have an ADHD brain. I've learned this about myself in the last few years so have been very interested in learning more about it and the skills to manage it and make it work for me, etc., etc.

It's so important to hear others share that about themselves because it tells me so much more about them that's valuable for me to learn from and it's inspiring. I'm a regular viewer/fan and relate to the experiences and stories you share and much of your experience, seen through the lens of ADHD, makes a lot of sense to me.

Trevor Noah of all people was talking his own ADHD too in an interview by Jay Shetty recently and I found that interesting and inspiring.

Also, I find it interesting how ADHD has pros and cons. It's not all bad. We just have to learn how to harness and channel our brains, thoughts and attention. The "super power" of hyper focus as it's called sometimes. We just have to learn how to use our ADHD for good versus evil, so to speak. 😁

Also, it's so important to me that others share that they have ADHD because
1) it helps me relate to them even more,
2) I'm inspired that they've done what it takes (and have found the resources) to learn that about themselves and are comfortable sharing that they have it,
3) I am always interested in knowing what they do to make their adhd work for them,
4) it adds to the remote / virtual support group I have of other ADHD'rs. I don't have anyone in my personal life I can trust who I can talk about my mental health challenges with so it's very important to me to know as many other people as possible who have adhd and who are willing to share their experiences and hacks, skills, solutions etc. And It helps me deal with not feeling that I'm dealing with these things alone.

No, you most certainly will not see me, you strange technicolor little man. My comments, sure. Anyway, that was useful. I’ve got a new pattern to tackle soon and it will be a challenge but it’ll be worth it if it comes out right. Other stuff… we’ll see. It would help to have a history of successes to fall back on for some of these things, where I have a history of failures… starting things and never bringing them to full realization.

I love this. I am struggling with this alot right now because part of me longs to continue working at my job but then I am also in graduate school to be a school counselor.

When I was in my teens I related to Alex and sometimes Haley but the older I got the more exasperated with them (and me) I got. I've settled down now and well...Claire is starting to look like a saint.

It's interesting that you, Jono, have / had / are in "sobriety" from a p*rn addiction because I learned from the (super amazing) Put the Shovel Down addiction/ recovery yt channel (whose host Amber Hollingsworth, oddly enough has ADHD too) - she'd be a great one to do a collab with btw - that adhd'rs are especially prone to addiction precisely because of the busy mind aspect - I think we're searching for ways to get our minds to shut up and or numb all the stimulation and thoughts and feelings and interests, we want a distraction from all the distractions, etc.

ADHD being more susceptible to addictive behavior isn't an excuse, but a great thing to be aware of - to me it just means adhd'rs just need to take the addiction tendency - and the strategies we need to use to prevent addiction and or maintain sobriety - extra seriously. - Yes, "we" - I have ADHD and addictive tendencies - for me, it's the internet and media that are addictive, including YouTube. I have too many things I find interesting and the internet is both a blessing and a curse for that.

And on that note, I've also learned from Tony Robbins "the six human needs" - the reasons people do things - (as slightly different from Maslow's Hierarchy of human needs), that if something satisfies 3 of those 6 needs, it will or has the potential to become addictive to a person.

I find this interesting because for me, the internet and media can feel like they satisfy all 6 of those needs so no wonder I find it addictive.

Those six needs are below, in order of the "lowest value" need at the bottom to the highest value one at the top in terms of social value and self actualization and where the most human fulfillment comes from:
- contribution
- growth
- connection / - love
(most people want love but settle for connection)
- significance
(Interestingly, apparently men will die to feel significant and women will die for love. Huh.)
- uncertainty
(after we have survival based levels of certainly, we then want novelty, interest and excitement. If life is too certain it gets boring and also there's no growth)
- certainty
(You can't do much until your basic physical needs of food, water, shelter, clothing, etc. are met and you know they'll keep being met in the future).

Too often in arguments my ADD doesn’t allow me to remember correctly what has been said. My Auditory Processing Disorder doesn’t always allow me to interpret what’s said and how it was meant.
