In this video, we’re going to talk about selenium. Selenium is a trace mineral. This means you only need small amounts of it, but it’s very important. Selenium helps you convert T4 to T3 (the active form of the thyroid hormone). A selenium deficiency can lead to symptoms of hypothyroid. Your DNA also needs selenium to be created. 

Foods rich in selenium:
• Brazil nuts
• Tuna 
• Shrimp 
• Sardines 
• Sea kelp 

If you consume foods high in selenium, but you’re experiencing selenium deficiency symptoms, it could be because of a few things, including: 
• You have intestinal absorption problems 
• You had gastric bypass surgery 
• You’re over the age of 90 
• You’re on statins 

Symptoms of a selenium deficiency:
1. Glutathione deficiency (can lead to heart problems)

Doc I'd also like to say Brazil nuts have been tested again and they've been found with extremely low amounts of selenium but I would like to say it depends on the soil it's grown it. Plants cannot manufacture minerals like they do vitamins so if the soil is low in selenium the food will also be low in selenium, the only reason why people thought only a couple of Brazil nuts can give you so much selenium is because when they were tested just that soil it was grown in particularly was rich in selenium

Took selenocystein and selenomethionine for years and am still deficient. Chelated forms are not absorbed and toxic to protein structure.
Has to be taken as a selenium-sodium-salt on an empty stomach and apart from all other supplements especially vitamin C.

I have a 98-yo friend who is very thin but was just diagnosed with gout. She says she is allergic to iodine. Have you ever heard of this? I will recommend keto diet for her. I watched your videos on gout. I just convinced her to stop drinking Diet Coke!! I’ll try to help her with other food changes. Adding fresh celery juice et. (She can’t chew very well)

Thank you Dr Berg. I have complex health issues and doctors hardly ever know what’s wrong. Instead I was on numerous medications which I believe made me sicker and sicker.
The medications got lost when I moved house a few months ago so I had to make do without them. (I had no choice - I moved to the middle of nowhere, near Christmas and couldn’t get an appointment)
Rather than the withdrawals I expected I suffered no symptoms at all and felt no difference so I didn’t bother going back on any meds.
I’ve been watching your videos and I’m beginning to experience a number of improvements even after only a few months. My cholesterol has finally started to drop whilst the ‘good’ hdl has increased. The extra weight is dropping off and I’m slowly getting my energy back. I’m also making sense of many of my health issues for the first time.
I’ve been through some terrible times over the years and poor health just added to the suffering.
Your videos have given me hope and better health at a time when I often felt like giving up.

So many important roles that Selenium helps with - a subclinical deficiency can negatively alter genes that regulate the inflammatory response for example, meaning that deficiency can promote vascular inflammation. And it seems as though many soils are becoming depleted of this mineral.

What is the best daily dosage and WHEN should it be taken and can it be taken on an empty stomach?? What other nutrients (such as Tyrosine) might be antagonists which should be taken at different times than Selenium?
