The Japanese Wolf has recently(2023) been captured on trail cams in 2 locations in Japan. It has not been officially listed as rediscovered as of yet, but has been verified by Zoologists as indeed being the Japanese Wolf, from the photos and videos from those cameras.

It's important to remember that while species are sometimes rediscovered, they are usually still critically endangered and still in great need of help. Some may have been spotted a few times after they were initially thought to be extinct, but are likely extinct today, such as the ivory-billed woodpecker. Since many animals live in secluded areas, they wait for many years before officially declaring them extinct. Some species, like the Kaua'i 'o'o (whos last song you can hear on YouTube, very beautiful) were declared extinct but rediscovered a few times before finally being declared extinct a last time. Hopefully we can rediscover some lost animals, and those on the edge of extinction can recover! (and awesome video!)

As someone who decided to make part of their lives dedicated to helping animals seeing so many of them that are no longer with us really makes me depressed I feel like it's my job to protect animals and I feel like whenever a species goes extinct that's on me 😔
