I don't mind the concept of civil union between two people. It's the expensive wedding, reception, ring, wedding dress, honeymoon, etc. driven by traditions, pleasing our families, and greedy wedding-profiting companies that makes me run the other direction. And even after blowing all that money out the window, approximately half of all marriages in the U.S. end in a divorce, so it's completely pointless to even spend 20+ grand on something you can't really make bank off of investing in and that might end up taking away your kids, money, belongings, and dignity away for the rest of your life.

In Greek Mythology we have a pretty nice story about how Kekropas, the mythical founder of Athens(and, possibly, the first human being) conceived the idea of marriage and started the tradition.
