Heat: Quicklime releases thermal energy by the formation of the hydrate, calcium hydroxide, by the following equation:[11]
CaO (s) + H2O (l) ⇌ Ca(OH)2 (aq) (ΔHr = −63.7 kJ/mol of CaO)
As it hydrates, an exothermic reaction results and the solid puffs up. The hydrate can be reconverted to quicklime by removing the water by heating it to redness to reverse the hydration reaction. One litre of water combines with approximately 3.1 kilograms (6.8 lb) of quicklime to give calcium hydroxide plus 3.54 MJ of energy. This process can be used to provide a convenient portable source of heat, as for on-the-spot food warming in a self-heating can, cooking, and heating water without open flames. Several companies sell cooking kits using this heating method.[12]

Would be interested to know the chemistry behind these heatstones

Hi Edd as you know im not one to piss on any fires but i would think using these in a mess tin probably would not have the same impact as in the plastic due to the heat pack heating the tin first before heating the grub I think it would be a great experiment though mate worth a try

Just a thought pop the used hot pad into a ziplock bag and put it into ya sleeping bag, although it may need to vent so maybe not. Great system for a hot meal where no fires allowed. Nice tryout and review bro. Safe travels

interesting idea ... especially using mess tins instead of the plastic containers.
Back in the early/mid 90s the MoD experimented with self heating cans, where the heat pack was wrapped around the outside of the can, they worked ... but internally cans were only about 200ml while the whole unit was about twice the size of a normal can.
Even back then i think they were £6 or £8 per can so the army binned the idea.

Interesting items ... I wondered - if the heat packs and the steam generated are 'food-safe' to have open food like the ravioli exposed to it, could it actually be used to 'purify' water for emergency drinking or wound cleaning ? Are there any 'do not' warnings about water contact or disposal stated on the item/packaging ? If not, that may also be good news in regard to safe reuse of the plastic pots.

Sorry to poke my nose in but you can get flameless ration heaters off of amazon £18.90 for 10 they have the bag and heater in it. You could use the heater in the mess tin or cook it in the bag. Would work out alot cheaper where you can get them for £1.89 each rather than £7.69 for the pot and heater. Just thought I would let you know as its alot cheaper than buying these and pack away alot smaller 👍
