7 FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE SCAMS (and how to avoid them)

Facebook marketplace scams are out there and even the best of us can fall victim to them. I have only been scammed once out of hundreds and hundreds of meetups. However I have read about and heard about these common facebook marketplace scams from primary sources on instagram as well as news articles. Avoiding scams on facebook marketplace, craigslist, kijiji, gumtree, letgo, offer up will save you the pain of feeling like a victim and losing money or your item.

Anytime you make a fb marketplace listing you get a scammer asking you for your phone number. If you give it to them they want to send you a “code” to prove it’s you. What they are doing is registering your number under a google voice number to take control. I can’t believe fb hasn’t cracked down on these. Sad.

I had a shady contractor come to my home years ago. My mother looked over the contract and signed it before I came over. Once I showed up, he immediately wanted to link up my phone to his for half the payment up front. Zero work was done. I didn’t feel comfortable doing that. And he only wanted that or cash payment. Did also not accept a check. He said he didn’t have a bank account. REALLY?!?! I asked to see the contract before I “Have him cash” I said I’d like to properly look over the contract with my brother who was a lawyer. He got very angry and said that my mother had already signed it, and he needed the money now. At that comment, I said, please leave. He tried to rip the contract out of my hands demanding money. And that it was not my signature on the paper. I told him that all of my MANY home cameras had him on film. He then ran out the front door. Got into his truck and sped out the neighborhood while screaming a lot of curse words at me. I’m very glad that I’m skeptical of pretty much everyone.😒😒😒

Great video. Be careful with just relying on a counterfeit pen though. I manage a movie theater and a few months ago we had a guy who was passing off fake 50.00 bills that the counterfeit pen would show up as yellow just like a real bill. It had some type of costing on the bills. The person was doing this to multiple businesses in the area. I saw a couple of videos of people ordering these bills off "dark web" sites. Hold the bills in the air and check for watermarks.

Hi Not sure if you can help or would be willing to! I have a brother p-touch 450 I think it is I use it for address labels mostly for Christmas cards and stuff and print from the brother address book app. I mostly use a Mac now and don’t know where to turn to do the same. I have no idea if I can save the files s I have somehow and transfer to the Mac. This software I’ve found mostly only lets you print one label or multiples of same. What software for a Mac do I need and what label printer?

“I’m out of town so I’ll have my cousin pick it up and I’ll venmo you right now, I need your phone number” I said come by with cash when you’re in town, they said it was urgent, so I asked how can it be urgent if you’re not even in town. Then I said venmo your cousin and have your cousin bring cash, their response “Didn’t have bank.” Word for word their response lol.

I’ve seen fake feedback on peoples Facebook profiles. Just got scammed from someone selling a vacuum for about $100 off new. They had 35 positive feedback and a 5 star rating. Grrr 😡

Yep! I have a pen and block anyone that tries to ask for my phone number or email. I also don’t do anything other than cash because they can also dispute payment and get their money back and the item and then it becomes a civil case which is time and money.

Thanks for the great tips. Here are a few things I have come across... If your a person who does yard sells, you need a counterfit pen. Its an easy place for criminals to get real money for their fake money. They will pick up a cheap item and ask if you can change a larger bill. I saw a lady get ripped off for $45. on a $5. item when she made change for a fake $50. That pen would have prevented that. And about buying anything privately always take the demonstration model instead of the boxed item. If they are crooks they won't sell you the opened one.

Any chance of getting off of facebook and creating a alternative local online classifieds to buy, sell, trade and post wanted listings? It's too much work to get on here and established only to have facebook ban or block me from their buying/selling groups while allowing many of these spammers and scammers to make many hundreds of thousands of posts. Makes me wonder if facebook has some partnership with them. Did I violate facebook's policy by blocking obvious spammers or scammers?
