Basically the only thing that's open on sundays is bakeries.

What I miss about living in Germany: the quiet peaceful Sundays and the evening church bells.

I lived in Germany for 7 years and when we first arrived my dad was mowing the lawn one day and the neighbors politely came over to let us know that it's Sunday

In The Netherlands all shops used to be closed on Sunday. My father, a fervent union man, was against opening on Sundays, because Sunday closing guaranteed a free day for people working in shops. They already work on Saturday, they also need free time for family and family visits.

I always think it’s funny that Americans in Germany often are stressed out when they find out about the closing on Sunday’s as if shopping or chilling is the only thing you can do 😅 I always like to go out into nature or work on my hobbies etc ..

the sunday thing depends a lot. some places are entirely closed, but some are just opened for less hours (ex if during the week they're openes 8am-4pm, on sunday they might be opened 9am-1pm)

Stationed there. Lovely Sundays. Getting dressed Sunday Best, walking to the park with the family clean, safe streets. Bike lanes and kid carrier seats. Miss that!

Germany: yes you can leave the house with a beer.
US : yes you can leave the house with a gun, but leave the beer in the house..

I miss everything being shut on Sundays from my childhood. The world just felt so much more at peace on that day. Now it’s like there is no off switch.

The greatest travesty is the loss of the Christmas period closures. Where you would actually get a good 3-7 days of almost everything being shut and you just had to enjoy your time and recoup from the year.

All of these are true. I have the same clothes drying rack.

Back in the early 90s I remember shops not opening on Sundays. Even grocery stores when my dad wanted to go grab milk. He has to go to our then local 7 Eleven store. Now a nail/ vape store.

I can remember when nearly everything was closed on Sunday, in the States. And most people had and used a clothes line to dry their clothes. Maybe it is now a generational thing.

You can drink in public in the French Quarter in New Orleans as long as it's in plastic. You can't walk around with a glass cup or bottle but they make all types of plastic cups you can carry around with your alcohol in it.
