How To Set Up Your Smart Trainer | Indoor Training

Smart or interactive turbo trainers are becoming increasingly popular. Here's our guide to getting one set up.

Smart trainers can interact with your head unit and various other applications using Bluetooth or a protocol called ANT+. You will often find the ANT+ logo on compatible devices. All you need to connect to the various apps available is an ANT+ stick or dongle, which plugs into your computer. From there you can connect your various sensors, for example heart rate monitors, power metres and of course your turbo trainer.

+Global Cycling Network can you talk about how to set up a traditional (non-smart) trainer with the right sensors so the rider can get training data into an app? I found that I can purchase an Ant+ USB dongle, and something like the Garmin GSC10 speed/cadence sensor to get a lot of valuable training data. The cost of such a setup would be far less than purchasing a smart trainer.
