You can tell that Tolkien had seen real war in his life, as well as great joy. He does not shy away from the tragedy and loss that life inevitably brings. Though the Elves were Tolkien's ideal beings, their existence was full of tragedy and heartbreak.

Thinking about the story of Elrond and Celebrian while listening to this song makes me cry. The truth is that Arwen and Aragorn's relationship was wonderful but tragic. Everything Elrond predicted came true. And his wife Celebrian, after being tortured in the dungeons of Morgoth could no longer live in middle earth and went to the undying lands to await her family's return. Elrond then had to go back to the undying lands and inform his wife that she would never see her daughter again.
