This is much better for everyone. Reduces food waste and slightly improves economy with no significant negatives outcomes.

All stores should do this
Edit: I've started a war

Most Asian supermarkets and bakeries/food shops in my area do this. It’s so convenient and saves so much food waste. It’s a great bargain for the consumer, and it also still puts money in the pocket of the store when they would’ve lost money just throwing it away.

Japan really packages, secure & care a lot about their food.

When I was in Japan I absolutely loved the Lawson and 7/11 foods. You can get some awesome value at any time of the day or night.

I lived above a supermarket that always did this. I got back from work 10 minutes before they closed each night. I almost never paid full price for dinners on weeknights

I never understood why all food stores don’t do this. Half price is better than nothing.

In the Philippines, the fast food franchise owners are encouraged by the company to dispose of food that are not sold by closing time. One of my gym buddies who owns a bunch of Mang Inasal fast food chains give away their leftover food to the poor and homeless. They also conduct feeding programs every weekends as a way to help the community.

I wish I could do this at the store I work at but due to annoying laws we cannot serve food past a certain timer to a customer. Bet Japan has higher standards in general though in regards to food prep as they make it look so good.

Years ago, on our way home from work, a Japanese place would discount their food boxes after 4 or 5 pm. It was made fresh earlier that same day.

We do this in the UK too. If you go to Tesco Express during the evening or late afternoon you’ll get a discount on pastries and other non packaged bakery items. The discount gets higher later in the evening… going from 50% to 75% so you can get croissants and pain au chocolat etc for about 25p

Best places to do this is at supermarkets. You can get full bento boxes for 20-80% off sometimes. And don't worry about it being close to being "expired". Japanese expiry dates are usually the date when food needs to be gone from store shelves. They're usually good for another week or more if you refrigerate/freeze the food.

Just got home from Japan. I recommend getting their pork dumplings (or “pizza dumplings”) cause they are really good and very cheap as well.

Here in Sweden it's pretty common to do so aswell. Sometimes they actually sell like creme fraiche or feta cheese jars or items like that for like one or two kronor, i think it's like 13 kronor in a dollar.

I already broke even right here, let alone living in japan 😂

Yup, all stores should do this. I recently bought something full price and realised it's near expiry. I felt cheated lol.

i remember an anime where the whole premise was going to the market to get the discounted items. and to the victor goes the spoils. the characters fought for those discount items

Some stores in Switzerland do this too, many foods that expire the same day or the next day will be marked with a 50% off sticker so they get sold and aren't thrown away.
