Things you should not do in Japan!
If your luggage is big, reserve and use the luggage space! It is the same cost and allows everyone to sit comfortably 😌

In other countries: Just put your luggage in the luggage compartment😬

In Japan yes you can do that. But for outside Japan, the luggage magically disappeared.

This is a new policy since 2020. Reservations can be made before boarding the train for free!

I did this on the train to Brussels from Paris. My luggage was long gone when I arrived at the destination.

In 2014, it seemed like the luggage spaces we saw were free & actually encouraged to be used!

I live in Japan, so what I usually do when I have to go to other city by Shinkansen, I send my luggage to the hotel at the city of my destination ( usually I use Kuroneko service at the convenient stores ). That way I dont have to be burdened by luggage at the train station, as usually the train stations in here have many stairs !

This is only for large luggage. The one stuck in between your legs is likely smaller than what the required size will be to reserve an oversized luggage spot. ~160cm for the dimensions which in most cases is anything larger than a LARGE carry-on. (About 5.1 feet in total dimensions of height+width+length)

Shinkansen cars have luggage racks above the seats that hold all but extra large bags. Some of the newest trains have extra luggage areas outside the passenger area.

As a frequent user of the bullet trains in Japan I'll try to address some misunderstandings that have occurred in the comment section.

First, there is an overhead luggage storage system. If your bag is a carry on size when flying then it should fit there. Some people just keep it at there feet because there is so much space in front of your seat. For example, you could keep your luggage there and not have your feet squished.

Secondly, the storage at the back is for bigger luggage that you would normally check in on a flight. That needs to be reserved in advance but you sit right in front of that seat. Literally right in front so no one will steal it as you'll notice immediately.

All of what I said can be verified on the different bullet train websites.

I have always dreamed of these places in my head but never had a way to put them into the world. Thank you for all of your hard work to bring them to life. It's such a dream come true to experience this!

Make sure to book the luggage space in advance!

Don’t jump down onto the tracks to rescue the Obasan who just jisatsu jumped in front of the Shinkansen but failed landing between the tracks only to have the back side of her head shaved off by the speeding behemoth . I got charged for disrupting the Tokyo train schedule and she got publicly shamed for botching her own death.

Reservation is only for select seat numbers. So reserve months in advance, by that I mean MONTHS in advance. If you can't, you may have a better chance to go to the passenger service counter of the day itself and ask for it.

Don't wear strong smells or listen to loud sounds in confined spaces .

Just got back from Japan actually, and the BEST thing you should do, is use their amazing luggage forwarding services like Yamato. You can just put your luggage at the hotel lobby, pay a little, and have it sent to your next destination. Best service ever.

One very important bit of information is that there are NO ROBBERS in Japan's trains like anywhere else in the world (especially Europe, I have heard from many friends their luggage got stolen in the train country)

I did the exact thing when I visited in November and December and no one told me to put on the overhead compartment since the luggage was a bit heavy and I have an ongoing shoulder injury. And when I booked my JR pass for my visit in January and tried to reserve a space on the luggage compartment in green car, the station staff actually told me usually they will only do so for passengers with extra large luggages😂. One time I couldn’t reserve mine and in the end a male staff had to help me to put my luggage on the overhead compartment and a female staff helped me to take it down before arriving at my destination.😅I thought being in green car were not even 10% full most of time during my multiple rides had me wondered why the rules are so inflexible…

Can we agree there was only one thing mentioned?
