Nice video. But I do not recommend any beginner to get an Oscar cichlid period or a Jack Dempsey (jacks) are not semi aggressive they are some of the most violent cichlids there is. That's the reason why they're named after one of the most feared boxers in history Jack Dempsey

thanks for the info! I'm setting up a 75 gallon and wanted to add a Severum - happy to know I'm on the right track and they won't beat up the smaller fish ;)

I love the thorichthys firemouth cichlids, the entire genus. They don't require specific water parameters. Temperature can be anywhere from 22 to 28 degrees, optimally around 24-25. They are very beautiful. Breed relatively easily. Not very aggressive. Fairly readily available. Eat almost anything. Highly intelligent also. Love their owners.

I am currently setting up a 125g aquarium and I want it stocked with Peacocks and possibly Haplochromis but I want the average fish size to be between 5" and 8". If you could put together a Top 10 list of Peacocks and Top 10 list of Haplochromis for beginners, what would it be?

Rams are sensitive to water quality and ph. Not a beginner fish. Convicts and firemouths go good together and are good beginner fish.

Keyholes are definitely some of the friendliest fish and they only need about 20 gallons of water for 2-3 of them

I thing you made a mistake by including the GBR( ram cichlid, not a beginner fish) you should have added the black convic cichlid.

Great effort into the water, but I have had trouble with the water quality that Severums which is harder to keep with the beginner.... Great vid

The fish at 2:14 is described as an “easy breader”... good with a bit of lemon as well?

GBR is pretty delicate and not fitting for beginner because they need that perfect water parameer to stay happy and healthy

With the exception of the Severum (assuming the owner has a decent sized tank) these are all pretty poor choices for "beginner" Cichlids. Oscars produce a ton of waste, and since beginner hobbyists are known to overfeed on top of this that = a disaster waiting to happen. They are also very prone to hole in the head disease. Rams and the Peacock require good attention to water quality, so again, not suited for newbies. I would proabably put a Blue Acara, Port Cichlid, Tilapias (except for the Hornet Tilapia), Firemouths and Convicts as better choices. All are quite hardy, don't get super huge and aren't terribly aggressive.

Kind of feel like I’m listening to a petsmart associate.. dude I’m a beginner hobbyist and I know damn well a jack is viscous lol.. I’d never start with that.
