*coraline creator 1* : lol all these theories are way more in depth than our original ideas.
*coraline creator 2* : should we break it to them?
*coraline creator 1* : nah let them suffer

Another thought. What if the blue boy is her son, but he didn't die in the real world. Maybe he fell down the well, and she followed trying to find him, as it seems unlikely an adult woman would fall down a well for no reason. They both stayed in the world until the Beldam realized she could use her magic to live off souls, she began to trap children. Her son tried to stop her, so she imprisoned him there, and when she was unable to gather any children (when she was starving), she resorted to consuming her son. However, she was unable to trap his soul and he returned to the real world as a cat, the thing his mother hates, as a spite for eating him. That's why he says "She's not like any mother I've seen." because he knows what she does to her children, also how he knows she eats them. He stays at the pink palace to guard the children after him, Wybie and eventually Coraline. That's why he helps Coraline, and also got in her way when she tried to leave for the well. He knows where the portals are, and knew that throwing the key down the well would simply return it to the Beldam. She can't unlock the door, but she can send it for another child to find, like the dolls.

“All she does is walk down the stairs” I mean... there’s nothing scarier than a freshly angry mother coming down the stairs

I have a black cat, and his name is Cy.

Also, if the black cat is her “son”, then that might explain why she hates cats, she might’ve hated her child.

But hey, that’s just a theory...

A film theory...

this movie should have prequel. so we know what's really happened. and then sequel, it would be great cuz I love this movie.

edit:can't believe I got 1.1k. BTW I think prequel that needed most, so we know how was other mother being so evil and how she got button eyes.

In another theory, I've heard that all three victims already had lived in that house, the Beldam tied to the house. The "boring blue boy" is that painting of the first person who owned the house, the first victim, the boy that speaks in old English. He says he remembers wearing skirts, calls the other mother a "Beldam" and used other old English words, all dating back to the 18th century. The girl in pigtails is Wybie's grandma's sister, obviously from looking exactly the same as the doll in the beginning and the picture. And the other girl with the longer face, she's the one taken in-between the both. In the house there are pictures of three silhouettes in the house, a boy and two girls, like the past victims. The reason the other mother has kept all the pictures and stuff the same in the house, like the boy who dropped his icecream picture in the other world, is to appeal more too Coraline. She would keep everything the same, but liven up everything to entice her, making the boy happy to eat his icecream, making everything more colorful and happier to make sure Coraline likes it to persuade her to stay.

Caroline is the most scary children's movie ever to be created and you can not deny it. Also kindly correct me. Not rudely.

Hey i made this comment TWO YEARS AGO and now I actually love this movie! Thanks for the likes anyway

I don't believe the boring blue boy was her son, at all. I believe that was her first victim. Think about it. At the time that miss spink and forcible first met Coraline they gave her taffy. But when they opened the chest there was three left with dates that were most likely the dates of the ghost children. But, what if that first taffy bowl given to Coraline was the date of the first victim. The boring blue boy. The parents became terrified of there son's sudden dissapereance that they ran away and left the portrait. This was the first time the beldam had a child so she immediately wanted more. That's why the dates for two of them were only 15 years apart. This might just be anti-climatic but I find this theory a good one.

Edit: If you agree like so we can get this to the top so the theorizer could see it and help him out with more theories!

To be honest, I think Coraline has schizophrenia.

If you think about it, at the end of the movie when the real parents come in and she mentions the snow on them it immediately disappears. Also there’s no way they don’t remember getting broken out of the snow globe, they would have some cuts or at least have hypothermia but they don’t. And the fact that when Coraline first opens the little door it’s all bricks plays into my theory perfectly, if Coraline was hallucinating the entire thing it would make sense that all along she had schizophrenia.

This isn’t really a complete theory I just thought it was interesting

I actually have proof of your theory that the well is the portal to the other world:
In the beginning, when the 'other mother' makes the Coraline doll and sends it flying out of her window, you can see the sky is black with white stars (basically what we see at night).
Now, here's the part that really gives proof.
When we cut to the scene where Coraline meets Wybie and discusses about the well, Wybie says "Supposed to be so deep that if you fell to the bottom and you looked up, you'd see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day."

Wait wait WAIT. Then why does the other mother hate cats!

I think that the cat is protecting wybe and he tells wybe to give the doll to coraline because he knows that she is smarter than wybe and has a better chance to survive. He also cares for wybe and not coraline at least at the beginning. The cat helps coraline and could help wybe too but he knows that wybe is too foolish and naive to resist the other mother. He and the beldalm are not freinds but due to her fondness for games she keeps him around as a sort of nemesis. That’s my take at least

PLEASE READ THIS!

Coraline IS my favorite movie, so I've watched it like a million times. One thing you have not mentioned is in the beginning of the movie!!! in the begging the movers are moving a chair into the house. IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY ITS THE BELLDAME'S CHAIR!!! I DONT KNOW WHAT IT COULD MEAN... But it would be great if you could answer

how the beldam takes the souls:
takes one eye for her own soul and one helps to build the world as is why coraline only has to find one eye for each child.

Small theory:
The other mother's child, the boring blue boy, died, and the other mother was really upset. She then freaked out about dying herself, and when she was given the chance to live forever with children, she took it.
