I think in the original story of Mulan the king wasn't quite as good of a king. He decided he wanted to take Mulan as a concubine, and given that he's the king, she couldn't exactly refuse. The lack of consent made her incredibly depressed and I think she killed herself in the end

Elsa: She can’t find a way to reverse the spell and she can’t undo the frozen heart of Anna so she freezes herself so they can be together forever.

What actually happened in the real Mulan story is that when she came home from the war she finds out that her dad died and her mom remarried, and the emperor requests for her to become his concubine, so she ends up killing herself.

I mean the original Little Mermaid was a tale about unrequited love.

She wants to be human to be with the prince and Ursula can grant that at the cost of her every step feeling like treading on knife edges and a quest to make the prince fall in love with her before a certain deadline, and if failed? imminent death will ensue. She fails to fulfil this but is given a second chance by her sisters who’ve made a sacrifice to Ursula, given a chance to live on as a mermaid by killing the prince and his misses before sunrise, but she ultimately backs out because of the guilt she already feels and jumps into the sea before turning to bubbles.

The Little Mermaid was originally written by H. C. Andersen who had feelings for his friend Edward Collin, that never were requited. It was written during the Danish golden era (1800-1870)
