Wall-flow diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot, and under certain conditions can attain soot removal efficiencies approaching 100%. Some filters are single-use, intended for disposal and replacement once full of accumulated ash. Others are designed to burn off the accumulated particulate either passively through the use of a catalyst or by active means such as a fuel burner which heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures. This is accomplished by engine programming to run (when the filter is full) in a manner that elevates exhaust temperature, in conjunction with an extra fuel injector in the exhaust stream that injects fuel to react with a catalyst element to burn off accumulated soot in the DPF filter,[3] or through other methods. This is known as filter regeneration. Cleaning is also required as part of periodic maintenance, and it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the filter. Failure of fuel injectors or turbochargers resulting in contamination of the filter with raw diesel or engine oil can also necessitate cleaning.[4] The regeneration process occurs at road speeds higher than can generally be attained on city streets; vehicles driven exclusively at low speeds in urban traffic can require periodic trips at higher speeds to clean out the DPF.[5] If the driver ignores the warning light and waits too long to operate the vehicle above 60 km/h (40 mph), the DPF may not regenerate properly, and continued operation past that point may spoil the DPF completely so it must be replaced.[6] Some newer diesel engines, namely those installed in combination vehicles, can also perform what is called a Parked Regeneration, where the engine increases RPM to around 1400 while parked, to increase the temperature of the exhaust.

Diesel engines produce a variety of particles during combustion of the fuel/air mix due to incomplete combustion. The composition of the particles varies widely dependent upon engine type, age, and the emissions specification that the engine was designed to meet. Two-stroke diesel engines produce more particulate per unit of power than do four-strokediesel engines, as they burn the fuel-air mix less completely.[7]

Diesel particulate matter resulting from the incomplete combustion of diesel fuel produces soot(black carbon) particles. These particles include tiny nanoparticles—smaller than a one micrometre (one micron). Soot and other particles from diesel engines worsen the particulate matter pollution in the air and are harmful to health.[8]

New particulate filters can capture from 30% to greater than 95% of the harmful soot.[9] With an optimal diesel particulate filter (DPF), soot emissions may be decreased to 0.001 g/km or less.[10]

The quality of the fuel also influences the formation of these particles. For example, a high sulfur content diesel produces more particles. Lower sulfur fuel produces fewer particles, and allows use of particulate filters. The injection pressure of diesel also influences the formation of fine particles

Fantastic advice from a real mechanic. Most would say its all sorts of things and charge you a small fortune. This video needs to be shared far and wide to help prevent people from being ripped off !!!

Wish I knew these things prior to having a car with a DPF. Could have saved a lot of money and many headaches.

JEEZ an honest mechanic THE WORLD IS CHANGING FOR THE BETTER, JUST WISH I KNEW WHERE YOU ARE AS I HAVE AN VW POLO 1.6TDI WITH THE DREADED DPF. I;M Ex mechanic, Ex class 1 lorry driver and Ex mobile Crane operator but got very sick 2010 so find it hard to work on my own car. LOVE THE TIP THOUGH MATE THANK YOU SCOOBS UK.

Proper mechanic, the plug in “technicians” today would state new DPF every time!

Thanks mate, I've got one tomorrow, on a A3 Audi, and I'd never have thought of this first .
IOU. 1Pint, Guinness.

That really was an excellent tip. So bloody common DPF and EGR problems these days. Thanks fellas.

Really Genius, a piece of advice that is hard to imagine... BIG THANK YOU!

You do know they don't actually give you a new DPF! They take the old one out clean it spray it with a rattle can if your the kind of customer to check if it was actually changed and then charge you thousands for a new one! A new dpf is no better than a cleaned one. Bloody gangsters!!!

Thanks lads, I’ve got a Citroen Berlingo van just gone in limp mode DPF blocked warning. Will check the pipe first. 👍🏾

Thx for a great video! I´m to replace my dpf pressure sensor tomorrow because of second time "soot filter full" and limp mode, first time a guy I know at a volvo shop did a force regen with Volvo Vida, took half a tank of diesel in 35minutes.... will def check the hoses at the same time!

Thanks for your help with this! Dealing with a sprinter in limp mode as well as a hissing noise that i just picked up. Hoping its something as simple as the hose

Another great video Leon, and something that every diesel owner should watch! Thanks mate, and hope you are staying safe and well.

Great video my VW Transporter 5cyl was plagued by DPF blocking and sensor problems and a simple pipe could have been the key to solving that. The garage repeatedly replaced the sensor as faulty then after 2 years on limp mode said the only option was to remove the DPF and remap.

done loads of these on mondeos also injector blocks up and can be cleaned with welding wire. A real PIA to get out tho very very tight. The pipe is very expensive as well

Happened to my 2009 Mondeo a few years back also. The entire hose at the back connection was burnt completely off. I just replaced both hoses with transparent silicone hoses. Still works perfect.

Stop gap repair, cut pipe at split and insert short length of suitable sized thin wall stainless pipe from your "never throw away treasure chest" !

At my wits end with a 2013 Ford Transit. £2k in so far and still in limp mode. New glo plugs, new DPF. Off the road every other week

Just had this on my 1.6 tdci cmax. Hose had split and put the car into limp mode. Sorted the hose but it wouldn’t come out of limp mode. Apparently it needs to have the values reset on the ECU cos it remembers the old values where’s it got sent into limp mode. Also the hoses are £££. It’s a high temp hose. Replaced it with a high temp fuel line.

Great video this one. I’m sure at a main dealer that would have been a DPF and a pipe mind.

Yeah, boost actuator! It happen to me too . I thought I needed a new turbo, but only a couple of dollars for new rubber hose 👍👍👍
