Keynote: Asahi Linux - One chip, no docs, and lots of fun

On November 2020, Apple released the M1 and sent shock waves through the mobile computing space. They also did something nearly unprecedented: while they officially support booting third-party operating systems, Apple had no plans to develop them, nor provide the documentation required.

We took them up on that challenge.

A year and a half later, Linux 5.19 was tagged from an Apple M2 laptop running Linux. This is the story of how Asahi Linux took Linux on Apple Silicon from zero to a usable Plasma desktop in just over a year.

This is the best analysis of "What it takes to make an open source project work": community, tooling, considering users

When Marcan announced this I really didn't think it was going to get very far, or at least not for a very long time, but it turns out this guy has a remarkable combination of skills and is capable of making a real success of such a project. So now I have Debian on my otherwise largely useless (I have no interest in MacOS) macbook. It can't be a daily driver until sleep mode works, but it's already useful. Thank you all - I am hugely impressed, and apologies for not yet providing any actual contributions. And that was a well-delivered talk too.

This project has a serendipitous collab of what could be called true "rock star" level developers/engineers/hackers, amazing work!

As soon as I heard about this project I bought a used m2 macbook air. Absolutely no regrets, and it was way cheaper than premium linux notebooks on the market. No ones matching Apple's hardware quality so may as well use the best.

You are such a legend for making this possible.

This will probably be the future of gaming for Apple silicon users.

I find it interesting to watch these videos about the development of Asahi Linux for the Apple Silicon Macs. Computers can run more than one operating system, since an operating system is a sophisticated program to control the hardware of a machine. I am glad to see Linux being developed for the Apple Silicon Macs. I have an Apple Studio Mac with the M1 Max processor. It is possible that when Asahi Linux gets more developed that I might try installing Asahi Linux on an Apple Silicon Mac. I am not a programmer I am just a home user and I need the operating system to be fully working and fully developed. My greatest concern about installing Asahi Linux is that if everything does not go correctly my computer could end up in an unbootable, unusable state, where I would have to take the computer to Apple Repair and Apple Repair would need to erase the storage drive and do a reinstall of Mac OS.

Being locked to MacOS on my MBP has been a huge source of disappointment (and productivity loss) for me. When Linux is stable and fully hardware accelerated on the Apple Silicon platform, I would venture so far as to say that MacBooks would be unrivaled as the best laptop to buy.

Thank you to everyone working on the Asahi project, it's incredible the work that you've done here

Linux on m1 will basically future proof these machines for the next 20 years, these machines will be like roaches, somehow still kickin

Love this project! Running in Dual boot and loving the speed and reliability. One critique with the icon/logo where is the rising sun reference? Community is great and love the streams! Thank you for your hard work.
