Linux on Apple Silicon can GAME NOW?!

preview_player
Показать описание

"This release features work-in-progress OpenGL 2.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0 support for all current Apple M-series systems. That’s enough for hardware acceleration with desktop environments, like GNOME and KDE. It’s also enough for older 3D games, like Quake3 and Neverball. While there’s always room for improvement, the driver is fast enough to run all of the above at 60 frames per second at 4K."

What's impressive is this was done by a vtuber using kate and konsole who had no prior experience in Rust. Asahi Lina is a LEGEND and it 100% proves that all you need is a powerful text editor and a compiler and you can do so much.

Now I only need HDMI, DP Alt Mode and Hardware Video Decode, and Asahi will become my next development environment

The only thing I wish this project had was actual hibernation, I go to school for about 7 hours a day and I'm always closing my laptop lid and the battery does not drain when doing so on Mac OS. When I close my laptop at night the battery will maybe only drain 3%, with Ashasi in some instances the battery would be completely dead it by morning. If they can get actual hibernation up and running I will have no problem using it as my main operating system

if they manage to get Proton with steam and wine DXVK on to detect m1 and run that would open an entire new world of mac gaming with Vulkan API's

4:20 I know it’s a guess but man you can’t say it’s probably higher than 60 if the MBA has a 60hz screen. Just a small tip.

I wonder if it'd be easier to write a PS2 emulator for an ARM chip than for x86. They were closer to that architecture after all. Giving me some thoughts about buying a Mac just so I could try to write it myself. Maybe once Asahi is running better I'll give it another thought. And yes, this is just because I want to play Psychonauts again.

the thing I am wondering the most about Asahi on M1 is video output - mainly whether the HW supports DisplayPort MST and actually displaying another desktop (not just mirror) :) ... it would be a really nice showcase of Apple butching the device on purpose if that works (as can be seen on Intel Macs) ... but here with M1 we need a second external monitor option (DisplayLink is crap)

Imagine Arch or Pop! OS running on M1 or M2.

playing on Linux is much more viable than on Mac, it won't be long before it will be easier to play on MacBook with Linux than macos.

Also please mention a regular battery drain result, like playing YouTube in brave for 2 hr with 50% sound and 50% screen brightness with xyz in background battery dropped abc%. That will be quite useful as well.

The upload date on the macos test is more than one year old. Wonder what results do you get now and compare that to linux?

I should have waited. I tried installing it on a M1 Mac Mini. I was a step ir two from completion and it failed. Now, no matter what I try, I can’t reclaim the 128GB partition I created for it. I can still use my Mac Mini with Mac OS just less space for it. And yes, I’ve tried all the control-R, option R and other variations etc during boot. I did a fresh install of Mac OS but it still doesn’t see that missing 128GB.

How can you tell "guessing 60-90" fps from what you seen if the screen is limited to 60hz?

I've been a Mac user a long time but have also wanted to try Linux. I poked around a bit with my Steam deck and like it so far. The ability to run Linux will probably determine wether my next machine will be another MacBook Pro or one of System76's offerings.
