Apple does not lock down the bootloader of the M1 Macbooks. They only do that for iOS (iPhone/iPad). The reason there was no Linux for M1 macs is just because there were MISSING DRIVERS. Proprietary drivers and locked down aren't the same thing, the bootloader is fully unlockable on Macbooks by official methods (not a jailbreak).

The fact that Linux has become so diverse throughout its existence is just baffling. I am very happy that it is now becoming something that anybody, with a little effort, can install and run

Pretty sure Apple would be keen to run Linux on M1 internally for a variety of reasons. Hector Martin from Asahi seems to think some Apple engineers are quietly helping by fixing bugs in the bootloader etc.

I find it funny, Apple could have added Bootcamp to M1 Mac devices, if it wasn’t for Microsoft being bought out by Qualcomm (not new considering the stuff they pull with Intel and Duracell), which is preventing Windows 11 from supporting M1 officially.

Even outside of gaming, exclusivity deals are cancer.

Nothing brings joy to my heart like people managing to do exactly what Apple didn't want them to do.

Asahi isn't really a distro. It's a project to bring Apple Silicon support to Linux. They have explicitly stated on their IRC and Twitter that their "endgame goal is to upstream everything and cease to exist as a distro". The "distro" they're providing now is just to streamline the installation process, and is literally just Arch Linux ARM with their custom kernel/bootloader, a preconfigured desktop and a tiny bit of branding. Their installer also explicitly supports bootstrapping an environment for installing other distros - although most likely none are compatible for now, aside from OpenBSD maybe.

Apple really didn‘t do anything.
They didn‘t make it impossible to boot other OSes (which they could have like on iPhones and iPads) but they are also not releasing any documentation on the chip (which is also possible). The second part is what makes it so difficult to port Linux.

They didn't necessarily "lock" the cpu's. They just created a new architechture so that all our favorite x86 software doesn't run. If microsoft were to make a deal with apple, they could probably develop a version of windows that can run on the new cpu's as an example.

Dear Mental Outlaw,
I hope you are doing well. I am going to share with you a story. Growing up, my first experience with a computer was the one my uncle brought to our family. And all of the games he burned for me and my dad... Soldier of fortune, command and conquer, half life.... Cut forward to earlier this year when I was researching and getting back into game emulation and I realize...the first time I ever saw a penguin was on the emulator download icons....also.... My first and only OS as of two or three months ago is Arch Linux. I installed it on an old and slow laptop first... I love that laptop its like an old journal and it now has renewed life. Bought a somewhat older business lenovo with an i7 4790 and updated co ponents in it for cheap and now have a sweet desktop/resesrch computer. My sister was gonna toss her laptop so I put arch and kde on it and we gave it to our mom so now she has a laptop of her very own to start learning and typing better with. Linux isn't just convenient and practical its RECYCLING! THINK OF HOW MANY PERFECTLY OPERSTIONAL COMPUTERS HAVE BEEN THROWN IN A LANDFILL! And I was able to prevent that for a few years at minimum with at least one. I've repurposed all of my old smart phones and damn it's like i almost wish technological progress would slowwww down for a few minutes so we can appreciate and even learn to use what we have! We could build entire learnijg facilities with old computers running linux! Public terminals/ free access to sooo much!

Anyways pardon me; i wamt to end my lettee by saying I love your channel and I appreciate all the knowledge you put out there. You're not just a cool guy. In our day and age; you're a keeper of knowledge. A rare and valuable commodity. Please continue to learn and grow and share what you can with us who are also here to learn! Thank you thank you thank you!

Not sure if you’ll read this, but I was just watching on odysee and had to come over to comment. As much as i hate apple, they have made no over the top attempts to lock down the new hardware. ‘Despite apple’s treachery’ makes it sound like they are making deliberate attempts to prevent hackers from having fun with the hardware. The opposite is true, you should read Ashai’s documentation of the hardware; it’s super interesting!

Basically running unsigned kernels is a built in feature. Through keeping blogs small and separate, as well as having effective trust modes an OS can run in, they have made the software in a secure way which works with the hardware, meaning running any OS on the M1 is going to be far more secure than an intel or AMD machine.

Of course it’s still absolutely proprietary, which is unacceptable! But it’s still better than the AMD/Intel hardware.

Again, I strongly recommend reading their documentation, it’s pretty easy to understand, super clear and concise!

It’s great to see the community is so active on Apple’s new silicone. I agree they are not “locked down” it’s just too early. The software gap and the time it takes for programmers to reverse engineer some drivers will take time. Good to see though 👍

this at least gives Linux users the *option* to use an apple product. Their hardware tends to be pretty great.

It's a reference distro. Once the work is done, they'll get it merged into the Linux kernel. Just imagine taking any distro and seamlessly installing it on an M1 Mac.

We need a RISCV SOC with a new programming language and tools that doesn't make everything a PITA. M1 is probably a decent starting point, I just hope someone out there puts the capital into building that product and all the good software devs would jump on that immediately.

I'm watching this on Asahi right now!
For what I do, which is basically just development and school work (which is entirely online), it's basically ready to be used. The only problems are Jemalloc (most of the time you just have to compile things without Jemalloc support), sound (which is hopefully going to be supported), and battery life. The battery life is pretty bad, but for other people, it seems to be fine. Even without hardware acceleration, everything runs almost entirely smoothly. The only things I miss are iMessage and the touch gestures. I think I'm going to use it as my daily driver for a while and see what happens.

So glad to see you covering this. I've had my eye on this for a while and its nice to see it getting some attention.

1:15 this is not true. Apple added in an update an feature where you can install other OS.
That’s how Asahi Linux works.

Good thing about these processors, that they are backwards similar. In last years reports, asahi wrote that they found some functions that were implemented from A7 (mby don’t remember) and this means we have a chance to build projects for m1 and further SoC from Apple that will need almost no effort to tweak or update for new generation.

The Asahi Linux Blog is worth reading through front to back. It's a great overview of the work being done and is written to be accessible to a casual Linux user
