SUV reliability is not constant, it is changing. For instance, good examples are KIA Sorento (year over year increasing reliability) and as an opposite - Subaru Ascent (reliability is going down). Watch this episode to hear about SUV's that can cause headache and must be reconsidered before purchasing.

A Landrover was also requested for testing but it broke down on the way to the test.

I own a 2021Subaru Ascent. This is the fifth Subaru in my family. I have 9000 miles on my Ascent and have had NOTHING go wrong w it. It is smooth riding, quiet running and the engine power is available at all rpm’s. I read that the ‘19 model had transmission issues, but I have had NO PROBLEMS OF ANY KIND…no transmission issues, no electrical issues…nothing. I would recommend this car to both my friends and family! Just take one for a test drive and you will be impressed.

I own a 2015 Ford Explorer XLT with 140k miles on it and have no issues so far, it’s a 4wd, I only replaced light bulbs and oil changed regularly and that’s about it . I hope it stays that way :)

I agree! I purchased my 2019 Ascent in May of 2019. There have been several recalls n the vehicle since I have owned it. However, I never had any of the problems for the recalls, nor was I ever inconvenienced. My dealership made the repairs while it was in having scheduled oil changes.
I usually buy a new vehicle every two years. I have owned every kind of vehicle from exotic to lame. At the time that I purchased this vehicle, Consumer Reports listed it as the best to buy. Its not perfect but, tell me one that is these days! Its now going on 3 years old and it has 33k miles. I have driven in all kinds of weather and never have I felt it wasn’t capable. It has one of the best safety ratings for all passengers. Mine is the top oF the line touring. I am keeping it.
Listen folks, had you rather have other car manufacturers that only has a recall when they are forced to do so( ex: Chevy and GMC engines( 5.3, 6.0, 6.2 V8’s) now have a class action suit against engine failure) or how about the Chevy Bolt?)). Or Subaru listening to the the techs and customers and finding problems and correcting them immediately?

I read that Subaru has more older cars still on the road than any other manufacturer. My Yukon was the best vehicle I ever had. 180, 000 miles with only one repair, the fuel pump. My worst vehicle was my new 1980 olds tornado diesel. My wife’s best vehicle was her and still is her 2004 Mazda six. Last month she drove it from Florida to Kansas and back. It doesn’t know it old. Garage kept, still shiny and a smooth operator.

I will never forget the time the entire driveshaft fell off my companies ford aerostar van going down the highway. Good thing no one was behind me. I heard a noise and looked in rearview mirror watching it as it summersulted over and over as I coasted off the road.

As for Consumer Reports...I take their ratings on anything with a grain of salt. I had a Jeep Wrangler Sahara for 5 years and loved it....not one issue other than gas mileage but it did not have the new engine at the time. I realize that things change and go back and forth with auto brands so I go by what my service mechanics tell me on which models are always in for major repairs. Hyundai/Kia is at the top of the list for problems the last time I asked which was about a month ago. I myself here in Florida have seen more Hyundai/Kia cars on the back end of a tow truck more than any other brand. That tells me a lot. I now have a Subaru Outback and so far, it's been flawless.

I'm surprised about the Subaru but not surprised about the other 4.

Wow. I love my 2009 Explorer. Full frame, V8, 200, 000 miles. Sad what the Explorer has become.

Sadly I am a Ford guy. I worked as a Toyota MDT for 35 years, And while still working for Toyota in 2018 I ordered and bought an F-150, which I love, it is finer to drive than any Tundra and I get WAY better fuel economy with My 395 HP, 400 ft.lbs, of torque V8. I believe Ford makes the best trucks. And Always will. And Toyota makes the best cars for us common folk. Yes, I own a few Yota cars I bought cheap, rebuilt the engines (due to lack of maintenance or miss use) and still drive them today. BUT I LOVE MY FORD TRUCK. No yota truck, and I have owned several, can take the place of a FORD, when it comes to trucks.

ha, Subaru Ascent 18 out of 100? Don't think so, have no issues with our 2019, owned it nearly 4 yrs now. You can't PREDICT something based on negative reviews, there are far more positive reviews that people just don't write about it unlike the complainers. I guess squeaky wheels gets the grease.

I had a 2010 Tiguan. I loved the handling and drive ability. It was a SUV that drove like a sports car. I could pass anything on the highway. But it was a lemon. Numerous problems. I went through 3 radios. I had the fuel pump go out at 30K. Seriously, when fuel pumps don’t go out on modern cars with less than 100K. A tie rod problem, etc…I did all the service with a VW dealer so I took care of it. Very disappointing. Got rid of it and got a 2019 Ford Ranger. After nearly 3 years, not an issue. Not one. I love my pick up.

I bought a 1999 Ford Explorer V8 brand new it had five miles on I ordered it I just sold it this January I had for 21 years no big issues over the years had a few rust spots that I touched up very reliable over 250, 000 miles on it and I didn’t have to fix it daily I took good care of it, oil changes tranny flush etc.

I own a 2014 Ford Explorer with 75, 000 miles on it. So far, the only issue that has occured is that the Emergency Brake broke and had to be replaced. Transmission runs fine. It is 2WD so that could have something to do with it but it is a good car. I've had it for 3 years and little to no issues. Many people are slamming down Ford for their cars but its because dealerships are raising prices and not letting the consumer know so they just get pure profit. They have good cars that are 2010 and up (except the fiesta and focus). Just look in a couple years and lets see how the Explorer is doing. There is no way to tell for sure that it is a heap of junk but Ford needs to fix their act.

When I bought my Forester in 2017 it had the highest ratings in its class. It has had three recalls and constant problems with battery draining. It’s enough to make you suspect insider boosting.

Our 2020 Ascent (46K miles) was our 9th Subaru since the early’80’s. I had noticed a rumbling sound a few times when shifting from Park to Drive and once underway. Mentioned it to my Subaru Service Manager. He mentioned a recall in the works for a CVT Transmission issue. In early February 2022, I got a Urgent Recall notice from NHTSA regarding the problem. Unfortunately, the message contained a black box in the middle of the page announcing that there wouldn’t be a fix until May 2022. Subaru USA really let us down with that response. Traded it in last week & NOT on another Subaru. We still have a 2017 Outback (26K miles) in our garage which wasn’t covered by that recall…Got our fingers crossed that it remains as dependable as its predecessors. I doubt if we’ll ever purchase our 10th Subaru.

Had a forester for 5 years no issue.. changed for a jeep wrangler unlimited.. on the jeep i had to replaced the rear lsd (rear differential) and rear drive shaft under warranty. The jeep wrangler has some small issues, but everything can be fixed.. its been 3 years and i had no issue with the jeep.. transmission and engine are still going strong The cool thing about the jeep wrangler is the resale value. My wrangler did not loose any value in 2020 due to covid shortage. In fact, the jeep has gained value which should allows me to buy another car later without spending any money. The wrangler has one of the best resale value.. like only 35% depreciation drop after 5 years. Most other cars lose 50% after 5 years… not the wrangler. But i do agree with one thing, the wrangler is so unpleasant to drive on the highway. But at the same time the only 4 doors convertible out there, and without the doors, it is even more fun than a dune buggy. Only the wrangler can offer this type of experience. Well, there, s the bronco.. but way too expensive.
