I'm a native Chicagoan, still live nearby, and have lived elsewhere including northern California. Yes Sir, No Sir, Yes Ma'am and No Ma'am have remained common respectful forms of speaking anywhere that I have been in the USA. This is especially true when speaking to a stranger, elder or superior. It was certainly required when conversing with my teachers. It is immensely the case in the military. Telling immigrants that this is not true will impair their assimilation.

I grew up in Canada and in Canada people speak North American English with very little difference from the US. I'd say Australians and Brits understand 100% of American English slangs and phrases because of the widespread culture of American movies and television as a whole. We however, don't get Australian or British shows, apart from Harry Potter...lol, so it's more difficult for us to understand their vocabulary and slangs...I myself didn't know the meaning of Knackered until I came across this video.

OMG, you have gone to Brazil. For me, it was astonishing news. I'm from Brazil and I am glad that you visited my country. I intend to visit yours as well. Have a good day dear mate.

Hi Gabby. I lived in NJ for some time and people would use "sir" "ma'am" addressing people they don't know... for example, at an amusement park, hosts would treat you like that...

I myself am Brazilian and living 12 years in UK I understand that living among the natives with time we start to think the way they do and then we start understanding their language better

I think these are great tips for people who want to sound more native, especially for younger people. There are situations in which we use "ma'am" or "sir" but it's not very often and definitely not with teachers. 👍👍

Once in Texas, i greeted a friend by saying "Hey! Gerry how do you do?"... He answered me the same way "Hi Pedro, how do you do?". Until i watched this video from Gaby, i realized he was just beeing polite to me.

I'm from Brazil and I didn't know the words "chuffered and knackered". They are more two new words that I will write down in my notebook.

Hey, Gabby! How's it going? Many people from Asia and Africa contact me through my Facebook page and most of them call me "sir" without even knowing if I am male or female. Many of them call me "dear" even knowing that I'm a man. Not "dear friend" or "dear" something... just "dear". The first time I heard a guy calling me that way, I thought he was gay 🤦. But then I realized that it's very common to treat each others like that between men in those countries.

I see no point in pretending to be American unless I really am American. So it doesn't matter to me what the Americans are used to hearing. The main thing is that they understand what I am saying.

I learn North American English because I’m from Mexico, which is part of North America as well. Cheers!

Great video. Some interesting differences with British English as we tend to use Dear Sir and Dear Madam, especially when writing in an email to someone unknown, .E.g. a cover letter for a job application. Often people write Dear Sir/Madam and then sign off with Most Sincerely/Yours sincerely etc.
