I've been a HVAC tech for 35+ years, so I know plenty about motors and capacitors. What I would not have known, until I watched your video, was to look for the extra small baby's sock stuck in the impeller of the pump of my rental unit. I was almost ready to order a motor. GREAT VIDEO! And, nice that you explained the way to check a cap without having a microfarad meter, for the average homeowner.

Thank God I came across this video. All I was finding was coupler videos, but mine was fine. Then I noticed the motor wasn't moving freely, and sure enough it was the drain pump. It swallowed my child's sock and got stuck. Thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars!

I’ve been repairing appliances for about five years now and can say I’ve never come across a bad motor. I seen a few comments on here that said a sock in drain pump and I do see that quite often. The capacitors can be tricky to test with regular meter. Always carry a good capacitor just to eliminate that issue before buying new motor. Good video thank you.

I had one of these "weak" motor scenarios, and I was just about to give up on the washer, but I studied the wiring schematic and found that the starter circuit (the one with the capacitor) is on a different circuit from the main motor coil. And there are a few scenarios where the main motor coil could get electricity while the starter circuit DOES NOT, thereby causing a humming, non-starting motor.

One scenario with a powered motor coil and a non-powered starter circuit would be a cut/disconnected wire going to the capacitor. A second scenario would be a dirty contact at the capacitor. And a third scenario would be with a crusty rotary main-switch (the one with the clock motor that drives the machine through its sequences) sending power to the main motor coil but failing to send power to the motor's starter (capacitor) circuit.

That is the scenario that I had with my machine, and I fixed it by squirting WD-40 into the back of my rotary main-switch and working it in-and-out and round-and-round -- spray WD-40 into the switch's center pivot, around the sides, anywhere you can find a space, and then work the switch around. That cleaned the contact for the starter circuit on my washer and now it's working like a brand new machine.

Hope this helps somebody out there.

Great video! I assume, since the camera literally told us nothing.

Is the first time we do is to flip the machine on its side? I am not sure what I am looking at here..is this under the machine? The back? The side ?

How do you know which connection is for the red wire to the capacitor? I didn't mark mine before I took it off. HELP!!

Don't assume we know how you got from the outside of the washer to the capacitor. Did you get to it by removing panels? From underneath? From the back?

What would cause it to pop the breaker in the electrical panel? I’ve taken the dial apart and cleaned the terminals and reassembled it and finally got it working so now I’ve gotten it to fill but then nothing …so I took the dial apart again and got the mistake fixed and now it’s made a humming noise and then popped a breaker when it went to spin and drain…..this poor machine is a pieced together washer from about four washers as parts lol….i bought it for $50 over a year ago so I’m lucky it’s even worked at all but I refuse to spend $600 on a new washer that will maybe last 3-4 years max according to the manufacturer…, this new junk is worthless and made to fail…

My Maytag doesn't have a capacitor.
It rotates well in the spin cycle, but hums during agitation.
I checked voltage from the timer and it shows 122.
Does the tub have to have water and clothes in it in order for the motor to run the agitator?

Our hums without agitating but if I advance the timer it will spin without any issues. Seems no fix for mine is out there yet.

Brian, I have an older maytag washer . The motor just hums. I removed the belts, and it still just hums. I gave the pulley on the motor a spin, and it started running, but after shutting it off and turning it back on, it just hums again, ...Bad motor.? I don't see a start cap on it.

Mine sounds exactly like that but isn’t there another reason why this is happening

Which wires go the stator coil and which wires to the armature brushes?

My old roper fills then hums, but no agitate. I can move the cycle forward and the water will empty and the spin starts. So no agitate, but does spin. What should I check?
