The 'Cheap' Nintendo 3DS For 2022

The other day I finally imported a New 3DS from Japan and it turned out to be a great pickup. After removing the region lock it functions as any other 3DS I have but at half the cost.

I've been collecting for the 3DS for years now and I'm still shocked at how quickly the prices for games/hardware rose. It makes it really hard for newcomers to get into.

Something almost NO ONE ever mentions about the New models is the vastly improved speakers. They have cleaner audio and are a LOT louder than the speakers on the 3ds and the abysmally quite 3ds XL speakers

FYI for people considering N3DSs from Japan -- a lot of the first editions have SEVERE screen yellowing on the top screen, and the cheap price often reflects that

I really love the look of the original New 3DS, I wish they would do the Red Green Yellow Blue buttons on more controllers and consoles.

Faceplates were such a cool idea, reminiscent of what they did with the GBA Micro forever ago. Wish they had versions of the New XL that also offered the ability to work with larger faceplates. Id' have bought that for sure.

Got all the 3ds stuff I wanted in 2017-2019 for dirt cheap and could not of been happier I did.

The 3DS is actually region free for DS games out of the box, no CFW needed! That's a holdover from the DS itself, which was on of the first region free systems. The fact that Nintendo 180'd on that with the 3DS still boggles my mind to this day.

It's really crazy to think about the 3DS/2DS lines and how quickly they've disappeared.
I bought a 2DS back in early 2017 and I know that Nintendo discontinued it back in like whatever it was now 2021.
But you could still find like both new 3DS's and new 2DS's until fairly recently like maybe a year or two ago.
I do think the pandemic accelerated what was already happening which was the last of the stock being completely gone.
And prices that were already getting high going sky high.

Thanks to collectors, there are no new 3ds or new 3ds xl on the market. Since they buy ungelatinised machines on their dusty shelves and put them side by side, we have to buy the products that are scarce in the market more expensive. I don't understand why one machine is not enough for them. It is everyone's right to play games, but they are sweeping the market.

I really prefer the New 3DS more than my New 3DS XL.
The screens look a bit more sharper (of course), due to the smaller form factor and screen size.
At this point, adding CFW to your 3DS is pretty much well worth, considering that the eShop is eventually going away really soon.

Not only that, my New 3DS came with Dual IPS screens when my New 3DS XL came with the top screen being IPS and the bottom being TN.

I still have this model, I much preferred it when StreetPass was still a widely available thing due to it being a better fit in your pockets. Noticeable improvement over the original model.

I like the XL model, Growing up with the gameboy over the years I'm just really tired of small screens. Yes you can see imperfections more, And the resolution might look better on small screens but that just isn't fun for me. I have no interest in going smaller.

Seeing stuff like this really makes me glad that I bought a whole load of the handhelds and games a few years ago when retailers were clearing out their old stock. I was very lucky when I happened to find out that Argos of all places was selling off their 3DS stock for next to nothing, a lot of the official Nintendo titles were reduced to about £5 to £10 and 3rd party games such Bravely Default 2 had been reduced from £30 to £2.50!

Needless to say, I ended up buying a ton of stuff from Argos alone for the 3DS. One of the best finds that I did come across at Argos was the New 3DS XL Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer handhelds, they hadn't been reduced at all but that didn't matter to me and I ended up buying two of them.

Found a Black N3DSXL in the wild at GameStop for $150 about 3 weeks ago. Snagged that bad boy up after 30 seconds of consideration. Super happy because I feel covered that I will always have a system to play on for the upcoming years.

There's something about handheld gaming that appeals to me far more than playing on a TV.

One thing people need to keep in mind is battery maintence on these systems...many models use different batteries so be sure to charge them once or twice a year even if you are not using them. The Small N3DS in particular has a battery that is really hard to find and OEM replacement for.

Pretty neat. 3ds is my favorite handheld system. I have quite decent ds, 3ds game collection and honestly, it make me really nervous to carry those games around. They are bot expensive and if something happens, I won't be able to replace them.

Absolutely still worth it if only for the accessible homebrew support. It pretty much becomes the ultimate Nintendo handheld emulation machine.

If anything, that just proves how lacking the Switch is on that front…

I don't get why nintendo doesn't keep it in production, I still see kids playing 3ds systems and not everyone wants to carry a switch around I think they were too quick to discontinue it and there is still a market for small handhelds.

I bought a New 2DSXL a few months ago when I got surgery and knew I’d be in bed for weeks. I got it solely to hack it and put the Ocarina of Time randomizer app on it. Since then I’ve probably put in a thousand hours on that randomizer. The XL 2DS is just so great even with the large screen and low resolution. Great device
