For those who don't know, Ethan Peck is the grandson of the Academy Award winner Gregory Peck.

A solid start IMO, and I get the issue with T'Pring probably breaking TOS canon but it's not like Trek throughout the years since TOS hasn't had it's share of little retcons here and there. Pretty sure Voyager had a chunk of them. Anyways, having her on the show should be interesting going forward and probably adds to going from this younger version of Spock to the version we see by TOS. I think many fans forget he was totally different in the cage.

Good review if a bit nitpicky. I think you missed on the warp bomb, and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on T'Pring because I enjoyed the interactions of the characters so much. The Chief Kyle thing doesn't bother me at all, and it is hard to reconcile your criticisms with your view on the casting of April. Overall I really enjoyed the episode and am greatly encouraged for the show.

I'm glad mostly because this show will make the Episodic/Canon whiners shut the frack up for a while. At last, they've got a version of their narrow-minded idea of what Trek is supposed to be - ignoring both DS9 and Enterprise who both had serialized seasons.

I’m impressed by the premiere episode so much I’ve seen it at least three times by now. I have never done that before. 😊 minor canon issues but so what. It’s the spirit of Star Trek that is most important, and what’s been lost for the past decade of Trek.

As someone who grew up with TOS, I was quite apprehensive about how SNW would be played. Based on this first episode I needn’t have worried, in fact I found watching it quite emotional as they appear to have recaptured the spirit of TOS. I really don’t care about what colour April is, nor Kyle either. Sets had to be updated from the original or would just look archaic by today’s standards, as would 1960’s fashion and hairstyles, so no issues with any of that either. These people, on either side of the cameras, are going to tell us stories and I’m hoping the scripts match the quality of the actors and production staff showcased in this episode.

Early days obviously, but I think Gene would be proud.

I love Pike's decision to make themselves known to the new species. The Prime Directive is such a mess. It's simplistic to the point of uselessness.

I feel like a warp bomb is more like a matter-antimatter explosion. That was my inference, anyway.

Very good episode; I also rewatched it the other night.
I think they should have used a different Vulcan character for Spock's love interest; they could have LED us to believe it was T'Pring, and then fake us out with her being someone else (or maybe a Romulan Spy?)
I loved Pike's speech to the Kylians, but them moving the Eugenics Wars out of the 20th and into the 21st century grates on me; they could have made up something to go along with the other made up wars they threw in, like "the Resource Wars".

As a fan of TOS from the '60s, I would give this a 7-7.5 out of 10. A solid strong opener. I did actually give a short round of applause at the end. Talking of Cannon. Uhura was not on the Enterprise in " Where No Man's Gone before" so Kirk was onboard before Uhura unless I am missing something. What is going on with the uniforms, they lack uniformity. Still, this is a huge improvement over Disc and Picard, and this is the Star Trek I recognise. Bring on "Children of the Comet"

Ah yes, Chief Kyle, my spirit animal and favourite character from TOS. Oh wait nope, I didn't even realize he was a recurring character, even though I literally rewatched all of TOS last year. This is squarely the "don't care" type of thing. Great episode.

I give it 4 stars. There were some questionable parts, like not going immediately to red alert 🚨 after being hit by plasma torpedos but I’m very happy we are getting back to Star Trek the way it was. This was definitely more like the Trek I enjoy. Improved writing. Not STD or STP. I can’t even watch those. Their terrible. This I can watch. Anson Mount is great as captain Pike.

I am so far enjoying Strange New Worlds and look forward to the next episode like Lower Decks - which I thought I wouldn't like but was hooked. I just hope they don't have a D&D episode or any more musical episodes. But from this episode and perhaps all of "New Trek" including the movies, my top moment is "I've seen my future, " moment. In the last 15 years it is the most Trekian of Trek I have seen since the End of DS9 (lost interest in Voyager when the Borg came and didn't have a TV station that ran Enterprise . It explores a potential dark future for the Kileyians while also giving them a potential future without pain and suffering.

Not a bad first episode. A few "what?" moments like T'Pring and the absurd precision of the transporter, but that's modern Trek I suppose. Definitely keen to see more!

As I watched it I too was tracking the discrepancy's of cannon. But other than those few alterations, this was the truest Star Trek in a long time. It felt like Star Trek. Not Woke Trek.

Following established TOS canon must not be a priority.

No federation member had ever seen a Gorn, nor interacted with a Gorn before Captain Kirk. Such was stated in the "Arena" episode.
