Shinkai Makoto (director of 5 Centimeters Per Second, Garden of Words, Your Name, Weathering With You, and Suzume) has grown immensely popular in the anime movie industry and many consider him to be a legend worthy of succeeding Miyazaki Hayao (director of Spirited Away). But do his movies really live up to the hype? In this video, I explain why I think Shinkai Makoto's movies are overrated.

2:36 ....I Personally feel abit of vice versa..!
True art & authenticity of Shinkai lies in his unique signature style of playing along the character situation & feeling,
(Rather than just usual telling series of events one after another, )
He has unique ability to "stick" his audience with the very low pace of plot, ...woth help of Visuals & Music at best crafted scenes
eg. 5cm per sec (which I consider as best ambassador of Makoto Shinkai's work-style).
He is not actually a story-teller in sense,
But, a visual poet who knows how to build, reveal & attimes even confess, in the movie itself,
the inability to judge one's backstory, through his mere physical & professional aspects...!

Makoto Shinkai once said in an interview he’s aware of the comparison to himself and Hayao Miyazaki. And although he respects Miyazaki and his work, he humbly answered that the comparison is “overreaching” as he wants to be himself as a filmmaker.

I came here thinking you'd trash the movies but I was amusingly surprised. Tho, one tends to find unanswered stuff in stories if one really looks for it - so I think that fine. unless it breaks the story that the film is trying to tell. Like in suzume when she flies off - why isnt there media coverage about it - people should lose their marbles. But that's not the focus of the story - its about closure and dealing with your past. So writers tend to brush over things that they dont think matter to the plot/message.
I now know why I didn't like Weathering with you even tho i think its more beautiful with its direction/animation/music. Its a worse Your Name - if we have to compare. But more so because I have grown up since I saw Your Name.
Thank you for putting some more amazing movies on my radar - Mirai and Belle. Gonna go watch those.
