I don't think this is necessarily best for everyone. Just look at someone like Dino Cazares from Fear Factory. He plays very softly, with great speed and precision, and uses very light strings (50 for B, 52 for A, and 64 for F#). Using lighter string gauges also results in less low end flub and more brightness, which is good for clarity and tightness.
