In India it is a rule by the government to display MRP or Maximum Retail Price. You can challenge if someone asks more than that. Such guys spoiling our Country's reputation. Tourists to be fairly treated.

Please don't be too generous when spending money in India. Everything has been dealt with a smile here but it is a serious issue. Don't buy stuff for anyone just because they are on the streets. And always check MRP on packed products. Never feel guilty when paying exactly as printed. It stands for MAXIMUM retail price. You have the right to bargain and negotiate for a lower price. So giving more than MRP encourages these vendors to keep charging higher from everyone unreasonably. Many of these shops, carts, vendors, etc show that they are struggling and innocent but they never miss an opportunity to earn an unfair extra buck. No need to be super kind to anyone. Consumers like me have been fighting for consumer rights even if there is Re1 discrepancy. Still fighting through consumer forums. And it is not an easy battle. Our ancestors have seen tough times financially. It bothers me when I see people getting duped because of their generosity\kindness. As a tourist you have no reason to feel obligated to please every random person on the street by spending your money. Don't feel guilty just because you are a white tourist from US\Europe\West. Wish you safe and joyous travel.
