BEST CHALK PAINT? | Rustoleum Chalkboard Paint Review

Hey Dads,

A few years ago, my wife and I decided to paint on of the walls in our kitchen with Rustoleum Chalkboard paint so that we could write lists and reminders on it. Over the past few years, we have been using it and it has been working out great for our family.

There has only been one problem with chalk paint that we have found and that is the fact that it creates a mess on the floor as you write with the chalk on it. I believe we picked up this can at Lowes or Home Depot, but I know that you can buy it online too (see link above).

Before we did the chalkboard paint on this wall, we first covered it with a black magnetic paint so that it could also be used to stick things to and to let the kids be able to play with their magnetic letters on the bottom area of it.

i just applied some to my wall and its really shiny. it doesnt look like a chalkboard it just looks like a black wall

I had the can for more than two years before I opened and used it now, at first I find the paint was a light grey and very liquid-ish, I painted it on bare wood which I sanded smooth, first coat doesn’t cover the grains, it acted like a stain, I though more coats will cover it, after second coat I was convinced that I need to prime it first, because it just turn the wood somewhat brown grey-ish with grains showing, which I then add a white primer on top of the initial two layers of chalkboard paint, after I sanded the primer and add in the chalkboard paint, it’s the same, not able to cover the base coat, it’s extremely thin, i used both a foam roller and a paint brush.
I’m finger crossing that more layers will help, I don’t know if it expires that leads to this or what, but it surely doesn’t look anywhere as black as it looks on the results that were shared by others.

so a steel sheet what every size you want, with a way to hang it (Screws into wall (using anchors) or set on wall studs (with just screws, thru plaster into studs) prime with appropriate primer for the caulk paint. then paint on chalk paint, mags stick to chalk board...but the regular wall, like you guys did, is way cooler

How do you chalk pens/markers work on the surface?

You have to do several coats of the magnetic and also use rare earth magnets 😉

I bought that paint but it was really transparent I need it to be more opaque, I did a couple of coats but did work... you think it was just a bad batch?

Will liquid chalk work on that type of chalkboard paint?

I’m a mom, but I will never ever use this product again. High density foam roller and woven roller left bubbles, with various techniques and paint amounts. Pro brush, foam brush and edger left streaks and caused bad flashing or sheen variations, in both small and large areas. 4 coats and 2 standings and it still looked horrible. I finally just gave up. Maybe they had to make their old formula more durable so they added a sheen, because the new can was not flat. Pic of old can vs new can shows the difference. I have pics of flashing. Rustoleum site doesn’t allow you to add reviews. Walmart site only shows great reviews.
