Super Mario Galaxy is my absolute favorite mainline Mario game as it was so bizarre yet creative and kept the spirit of being a Mario-eqsue game with it having a darker tone with fantastic gameplay, music, and world design. Excellent video, great work as always Felix.

I think galaxy is still number one for me. The planetoid physics are just the most fun thing ever in a platformer.

I was 7 years old in 1985 when Nintendo came out. Thought it was the greatest thing ever at the time. The first mario game was good. But super mario 3 is my all time favorite.

SM64, Galaxy 1, Super Mario World and SMB3 are my top tier Mario games.

Odyssey was an amazing game that I thoroughly enjoyed, but I don’t hold it in as high regard. It’s all about the impact these games had at all those different times in my life.
Growing up with a hand me down NES, to a Super NES, and moving to the N64, which was my first new console that I payed for with my hard earned money. Lol. And yes, Oddy was an incredible time with that fresh new Switch…I just don’t have that itch to constantly go back to revisit it.

Difficult to rank but I'd say SMG 1 & 2 are in my top 3.

I really appreciate all of the love for NSMB DS recently! If we didn’t get like 80 sequels and suffer from major burnout from the sub series it def would have been treated with way more respect

My only issue with Odyssey is that it gets repetitive facing the rabbits multiple times, but otherwise it's a masterpiece.

I didn't think any game could beat Odyssey until I played Galaxy during lockdown. The music, the atmosphere, the level design and the art style are unrivalled. Galaxy is incredible.

Cool video dude, first one I've seen from you and it's brill 👍

New Super Mario Bros. at #14 is a crime. I’m definitely biased, but it’s personally my
favourite 2D Mario.

Also, as much as I enjoyed Odyssey when it first came out, there was definitely some magic in the original Super Mario Galaxy that Nintendo hasn’t been able to recapture since. I agree with the other comments that say Galaxy should be #1.

I guess the diversity of opinions on this series really demonstrates how great all the games are!

Super Mario World changed the game entirely. It was beautiful, compelling, and at times challenging. It was inspired.

I think Odyssey is my personal favourite, but I have a real soft spot for Sunshine. There's just something about the setting and style of the whole game, that makes it an unforgettable adventure. Even if it was a bit rushed and unfinished.

Really dig Felix’s calming voice. You can definitely tell he has a music background seeing how good he is at mic-ing himself

I’ve grown up with Mario. I grew up with 64, played Galaxy when I was 12-13. But nothing compared to the wonder of odyssey when I played it as an adult in 2017. It is worthy of number 1. Even if it has some flaws.

No Lost Levels, USA, NSMB2, or NSMBU? The Land games are missing too...

64 is a nostalgic game
Sunshine is a summer game
Galaxy is a beautiful game
Galaxy 2 is a beautiful sequel
3D Land is an eye popping game
3D World is a frantic game
Odyseey is... well, an odyssey!

I had never played Mario Galaxy until 3D All Stars came out, and I have to say that that game was an absolute masterpiece, way ahead of its time. Such care was put into absolutely every level! And it had a pretty great story for a Mario game!

I didn't get any of that from Odyssey. Sure, it was still a very good 3D platformer, but it felt more like an homage to previous Mario games, rather than a new experience. The biggest innovation was the enemy capture mechanic, which was fun for some enemies, but fell short for others (e.g. tank). Even though the Cappy throw was a welcome addition to Mario's move set, I did not enjoy the control scheme one bit; it just doesn't work that well. Perhaps one of my biggest complaints is that a lot of places felt barren and abandoned, the worst of which was Peach's castle in the Mushroom Kingdom bonus world. It is completely empty, and that made me genuinely sad. The multiplayer experience was also lacking.

Other than that, SMB3 is my favorite Mario game of all time, but I realize that SMW is objectively a better game; it's just not the game I grew up with.

So my objective ranking would be...

#1. Super Mario Galaxy
#2. Super Mario World
#3. Mario Maker 2
#4. Mario 3D World / Bowser's Furry... er... Fury
#5. Super Mario Bros. 3
#6. Super Mario Odyssey
#7. Super Mario 64
...and others behind it

Team Super Mario World here. One thing I felt like wasn't mentioned enough in the video is how Secret Exits worked in Super Mario World. You see that red dot on the map. You know there is a secret exit. You then dedicate your entire childhood to finding the Secret Exit in Cheese Bridge. Er, wait, maybe that was just me. While there were Warp Zones in SMB and Warp Whistles in SMB3, the Secret Exits leading to branching paths, shortcuts, switch palaces, etc. changed not just Mario but the platforming genre as a whole.
Honestly though, after loving Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I am dying for a new Mario game. How long are they going to make us wait?
