Lawnmower Blade Sharpening

This is what it looks like when a professional sharpens lawnmower blades. Most home owners and diy lawn guys only have to do this once every year, but lawncare professionals like use have to sharpen our lawnmower blades at least twice a week! #lawnmower #lawncare #lawncarenut #lawns #lawncarelife #diylawncare #nebraska #lawntok #lawnsoftiktok

Like coffee every morning for us. It keeps the mower moving faster while cutting. So worth it

I do mine every other cut at the house on my walker. So easy I never feel like it’s a waste of time. Cuts to perfection!

Looks like he might be destroying the quality of the edge by over heating it. That may be an issue in why you sharpen them so much as well. I could be wrong though.

When I mowed lawns, the company I worked for had us sharpen blades every morning. Looking back it really did pay off.

When I used to cut grass as a side job, I had 3 sets of blades for my JD mower. I changed blades every week. Earlier if I managed to go through a lot of sandy areas. It makes a huge difference with stragglers and speed. I have heard many people say they never sharpen and never change blades unless they were worn out. And the quality of cut shows.

Sharp blades make bright lines in your pattern without going over it multiple times

All the people saying not to sharpen so often obviously are not cutting grass in places where grass GROWS. We sharpened blades every day, even in the middle of winter. If you are cutting st augustine or bahia, you need to constantly sharpen the blades. Especially when you are running the mower for 8 hours straight on a bahia hillside/lakefront.

I sharpen with an angle grinder about every 50 hrs. Yeah I could do it more often but it's what ive done for the last decade.

Id recommend looking into heat treating the blades you won't be able to sharpen them when they get dull at least without the right equipment but they'll last a good time without the constant maintenance

So the real question is, is it more beneficial to sharpen with a file as to not over heat the edge? Or, to intentionally heat the edge up by grinding it to reach a harder temper? Does anyone know if they make mower blades with a certain steel where it can not reach a certain hardness?

Sharp blades keep the tips of the grass blade from browning or “silvering” is what we would call it. We did our blades once every other week. Twice a week is too much no matter how many lawns you cut..
