You are allowed modify certified aircraft. You need an STC to do it though which can be a longer, more expensive process

I built an Experimental airplane from a kit. I used nothing but aircraft grade materials and fasteners. It was inspected at several stages of construction by a certified aircraft mechanic. Before it flew, it was inspected by a designated examiner. The whole time I was building it I kept in mind who was going to be flying in it.

Okay so. That's not entirely true. The experimental planes also have Certifications. Which is an 'Experimental Aircraft Certificate" you are allowed to change a lot of things with Standard Aircraft Certificates.

Experimental means that you (as the manufacturer) accept all the risk as you work out the kinks. 😱

I’m building a Vans RV 12 as an ELSA. I do have to follow certain specifications, but I’m loving the ability to put my own choice of avionics. I’m able to install IFR landing instruments.
I am so hype for the new MOSAIC rules though.

Experimental has a ton of advantages (too long to list), except for the buyers of said aircraft....Nothing like seeing AutoZone sticky led tape for panel lights on Barnstormers to remind you that experimental could have some duct tape structure that you might not want

You can customize a certified airplane as much as you like… as long as there is an STC for it and you can pay your A&P.

You can absolutely mod a certified aircraft. Don't even need an stc if you can convince the FAA in a 337

I wouldn’t trust myself to build an experimental airplane because I have no qualifications for it. And, if I wouldn’t trust myself, I certainly wouldn’t buy a used one and trust some other unqualified person that is selling their build for whatever reason.

I had a boss in the oil field man could not read a lick at all he went and bought himself a plane and he was flying it around and no he did not have a pilot's license and he flew like that for quite a few years it's amazing what you can do when you are in the oil industry and how he would navigate because he didn't know how to use any of the instruments he would literally follow roads that he knew until he landed one day at the airport and some guys and suits asked him for his pilot's license lol
