What did Queen Elizabeth II do in the Second World War?

In April 1944, young Queen Elizabeth – then Princess Elizabeth – turned 18. Her teenage years had been against the backdrop of the Second World War. Elizabeth was determined to ‘do her bit’ for the war effort, as so many of her peers were. Within a year of turning 18, Elizabeth would sign up for the Auxiliary Territorial Service. It was an unprecedented decision – this would make her the first woman in the Royal Family to become a full-time member of the armed services.

Chauffeur to the Queen: "Mam, the limo broke down again. I will get our mechanic. "
Queen: "Nonsense! Get out of my way and hand me that wrench!"

MY grandmother worked as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross during WWII. Very few women knew how to drive, let alone fix a car. As the daughter of a garage owner, she knew how to do both. She and my mother picked up wounded British soldiers from the Brooklyn Navy Yard and drove them to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Like Queen Elizabeth, my mother considered these experiences to be a seminal experience of her youth. And she would often astound car mechanics when she brought her car in to be serviced. These young women were quietly proud of their contributions which did so much to help ensure victory. They considered it a privilege to have performed their duties.

Now I understand why Queen Elizabeth is loved so much by her people. I thought it was just a blind stupid love just because she is the queen. But she is not "just a queen". She did so much to serve her people. Mad respect for her. How I wish there are more people like her.

As a proud Irishman I have always seen something good in this woman and I believe she has done alot more good than bad in her life. She was also a very pretty young woman with a nice smile and beautiful eyes. She still has the smile and eyes now at almost 100 years old.

This is one absolutely exceptional woman.
There will never be another like her.
All the things she has done and have been through would have destroyed another woman or man.
God bless her.

I'm impressed of how brave Queen Elizabeth was at 18 during the war and how she managed to learn everything that they taught her. She was a mechanic! That toughness what made her a good Queen. May she rest in peace 💐

I really admire the fact that she insisted in doing as much as she could -- and that counts as part of the training that any head of state should have, probably the most valuable part! She's been serious, sober, and responsible her whole life, a real one in a million as heads of state go.

My mother trained in the ATS at Camberley during the war too, qualifying as a lorry driver and later, ambulances. At the age of 70, two years before her death, she drove a large lorry to help an Australian friend bring in the farm's harvest when his regular driver was taken ill.

This is fantastic footage and well put together. Honorable mention must also be given to the women who worked in intelligence gathering. Especially the Y Service and Bletchley Park. Because of the nature of the work even their parents were not allowed to know what they did. Women & men of honour respected the Official Secrets Act to the end of their lives. No wonder we call them the greatest generation. God bless and care for our gracious and noble Queen.

Moving to watch this now after her death. I think the war probably did shape her sense of duty and commitment. One of the last of that generation. RIP Queen Elizabeth.

HRH has the distinction of being the last surviving Head of State to serve during WW2.

2 Reasons to Love the Queen:

1: When it was a World War - she served like everyone else
2: When the Saudi Prince came to visit, as a sly dig at Women not being allowed to drive in Saudi - she personally drove him around (I believe at speed) in her Range Rover around her Estate.

Some years ago a man whose car broke down in north Norfolk was helped by a middle-aged lady who, after looking under the bonnet of his car, diagnosed the fault, got the vehicle going again, and waved him off. It was only when he said to his son that the lady looked familiar that the little boy said "that was the Queen" and he realised it was the monarch who'd been the "lady mechanic".
