The Targaryens were a minor house in Old Valyria, they also have a capability of withstanding extream heat as shown by Daenerys. What if the targaryens were the slave masters who developed a resistance to heat while overseeing the slaves under the 14 flames.

It shows why Daenerys has such an distain for slavery herself, righting the wrongs of her ancestors, even unknownly. Which also explains why the Targaryens didnt conquor Westeros for so long after the Doom and only did it when the threat of the Others came to Aegon in a dream.
