Valyria reminds me of the empire of Rome. Great civilization, very advanced for their time, big territory, many conquests, started as a small village, great families ruled at least for a time and no sole ruler (king, emperor, etc.) during the time of the republic.
I know where the inspiration came from.

A minor nitpick: you can't "extract bronze" from mines, as it's an artificial alloy of copper and tin. I'm assuming you meant copper.
