Top 5 Reasons You Can't Fix Your Uneven Shoulders

Uneven shoulders are a common postural asymmetry that can be bothersome both for functional reasons and for aesthetic reasons.

While certainly symmetry tends to be associated with desirable traits such as enhanced longevity, health and attractiveness, asymmetry in the body is the norm.

When we see uneven shoulders, this is often pretty normal within a certain range, but when it is really significant, this can often be a sign that other areas of life are also significantly out of balance.

In regards to the way we move, we can think about a hierarchy like this:

Level One: General wellness, state of the body (nervous system, immune system, circulatory system, etc.)

Level Two: Basic functions like breathing, swallowing, etc. These are things we do everyday that are patterned and can influence alignment and movement patterns as well as the systems that need to be in good shape for us to have a good state of general wellness.

Level Three: Orientation in space. This is overall where we feel our body should be to operate "normally." This is often a result of our body making it easier for us to breathe and function, but many times, even if we take care of levels one and two, our brain is still used to being in a certain position in space. Activities that re-orient us towards a more balanced position help this.

Level Four: Mobility and body shape (compression and expansion). Being able to elongate or expand certain areas and shorten or compress certain areas allows us to change the shape of our body to more easily accomplish movements in a variety of positions. Specific retraining and breathing drills work well for this.

Level Five: Position-Specific Strength. Once we can achieve positions more easily, we then need to test our ability to maintain these strategies under load. Progressive strengthening that incorporates movements in desirable positions helps change to actually STICK!

If you don't have levels 1 and 2 in place, don't think jumping right to levels 3-5 is going to have any significant positive effect.

I've been to so many physios, osteopaths, chiropractors, etc and none of them could ever tell me why my shoulders were so uneven. Your explanation about the rib cage rotation was spot on and I'm gobsmacked that no other professional I've seen ever mentioned this. Thank you very much!

So happy to see you back!
Wow, I sure fit this video, points 1 to five, and finally reached 5 where I become stronger month to month, year to year, but I still have a nervous system that loves to overreact and try to put me back to square one, but at least it is square two or three by now. Love your videos, always thoughtful, well planned, and above all, filled with substance.

Best I have seen on this subject. You provide the "how to" and you are the only one that goes into how to make it stick. Thank you so very much!

This is where integrating somatic movement (originally created by Dr. Hanna) is very helpful. It’s very gentle and it is a neurological method of relaxing and releasing tense muscles that are patterned over time by targeting the autonomic nervous system.

Hello! First of all I love your videos you are great! Second of all, I am an athlete and I apply your methods to my training. But i feel like my walking is compromised. By walking I mean the position of the foot and the mechanics of stepping. Which part of the foot do I use? How does it affect the rest of my mechanics? All these questions that I have no answer to. Can you make a video integrating cues on walking and correct posture while doing so? Also with running would be great! Thank you very much!!

Great and informative video! It would be immensely helpful if you would give examples of activities that help in achieving mentioned goals.

Also, since I'm trying to make sense of everything, what is your suggestion in regard to watching order of your videos/playlists?

Great vid, I have had bad left neck shoulder and back pain for 7 years now, multiple tests and treatment but nothing working at all, lost my gardening job because of this issue, just desperate to get back to full health again. I have a fallen arch on right foot which I have tried to correct, is this something that will have a major effect on the left shoulder through hip displacement or is it likely to be more then just that? Also what is your opinion on graston massage?

In order to reorient rib cage we need to reorient our pelvis? So I guess 90-90 and all fours exercises 💡

Hello

I messaged you a few days ago and mentioned my footwear was causing strange issues up my back and you mentioned it could be some sort of faulty position in space kind of thing. I apologise if I said that wrong. I’ve actually had results from an x ray back and they’ve said it’s bilateral pincer deformities… do you think this could cause my issues up my back and tension/pain in SI joint areas? FYI I have an anterior tilt too. Thanks in advance
