I received a 30% discount on my medical bill from giving birth! Here are the 5 steps I took to negotiate a medical bill so you don't have to pay full price. Let me know if you used this technique and how much you saved!

Why you would do this - hospital services are heavily inflated. Hospital costs are not transparent. Insurance companies can negotiate what they'll pay with hospitals, why can't the consumer?

This video was VERY helpful! Been dealing with bills all day from a surgery my husband had earlier this year and an Oral Surgery my daughter had. I got two No's, one 60% off and One %30 off! ....I would say that was a good day! :) It seems that hospitals are more willing to negotiate than dental offices. One thing is to remind the provider of what they ALREADY got from the insurance company. In at least one state (Washington) providers have to give 35% discount if no insurance mandatory. Also if the provider doesn't tender claims to insurance inside of 30 days they cannot claim against anyone after.

Yes. I needed a chest x-ray and I was told I would be billed $200. I asked what it would cost if I didn't have insurance and was told it would be $20 so I said I didn't have insurance because I had a $500 deductible.

I asked multiple times before a CT scan if I would get a surprise bill and what my payment would be. I called that day and was told it was covered. I got the bill and it was insane! You can't do enough to prevent the insurance company from fleecing you. I called them and was told my call is on record that day so I'm waiting to see if I got a miss quote. I wonder if they record these calls so I'd have proof but why would they do that if it only helps us. I just don't trust any of it with these companies.

Things are this way because there is very little pricing information on medical services. You don't know the price until after the procedure.

I purchased new insurance to have a spine surgery and hospital said they confirmed surgery with insurance. Now after surgery I got a denial from insurance refusing to pay at all because they wont pay for a preexisting condition the first year. Now I am left with a bill of 128, 000 and there is no way I can pay even half of this.

We used your recommendations, however billing absolutely, positively refused to negotiate with us at all. The only thing they agreed was to send our inquiry to the dispute department, but stated it was unlikely they would be willing to negotiate either. WTF?!
