People in most Europe not having to pay medical bills 😅 (even though we do have to pay taxes for healthcare)

I had an emergency gallbladder removal, and the bill was over $50, 000 in hospital alone, no insurance at the time, asked for an itemized statement, and whoop, they cancelled the entire bill. Maybe I was just lucky

Also, find out about the charity options ASAP! Some hospitals won’t let you apply after like 30 days even Though you hadn’t received your bill yet and didn’t know how much you supposedly owe!

honestly it's just sad that people need to go into enormous medical debt in the US.
I am so happy that I live in a country with free healthcare.

Retired medical personnel here and I'm here to tell you my RBFF scrutinize everything if you don't know what that item is look it up if you're still questioning it try looking it up and putting medical billing definition. Some hospitals had charged over $100 for a box of Kleenex that wasn't opened. So go over everything make notations on the bill of hey I didn't have this or I didn't use this I'm not going to pay for it don't be afraid to stand up for what's right either and let them know I'm not going to pay for this I did not use this and then also let them know hey I want to get it taken care of. Question everything not just on a bill in life. Questions are only a bad thing if you know the answer you're going to give is a lie. Once again happy New Year everybody.

My wife and I just had our first baby in October. My wife did exactly this, we had a bill for like $2500 or something we said we would pay the entire balance now and asked for a discount. I think we ended up paying like $1700-1800 with the discount. I was happy with that. Especially with a NICU stay at a completely different hospital she was born at.

Lots of places in the South now won't negotiate, they just refer you to their payment plans. It used to be helpful to negotiate like 10 years ago but now they just send you to collections if you don't pay in full

Several years ago my close friends son tried to commit suicide. He was having serious mental health issues and had to spend weeks in the children's hospital psych ward. Her husband worked a union job and had so-so insurance. She calculated how much she was going to have to pay and it was more than $50k. I knew the hospital well and told her she should call and ask if they have any programs for hardship because I qualified for one once and not only did they zero my bill, my child was allowed free medical at that hospital for 3 months. At first, she wouldn't do it because she thought she wouldn't qualify since they had a regular job and insurance. When she was finally persuaded to call, they zeroed the whole bill. (We lived in a tech city where lots of people donated to that hospital.) It never hurts to ask.

Just wanted to correct the last thing. As of July 2022, any medical bills or medical debt except strictly cosmetic, can no longer affect your credit score. They can show on your credit report just as a debt but legally it can no longer bring down your credit score. Any bills previous to July 2022, some are removed from affecting your credit score and others will unfortunately stay. But any new ones can't bring down your credit

Rule #1 don’t go or make a for-profit hospital system to be your provider as they have no obligation to negotiate or offer special rate or discount directly to clients.
On the other hand, non-profit has to comply with the federal programs to provide financial assistance for people with specific income.

That's if you get a bill before the facility sends it into collections. You might not understand the shit I went through last year because a facility sent my bill to collections before sending it to my multiplan 'insurance' and the many times I had to call the facility and the provider to rectify the situation.
